Reliance 6 circut transfer switch,
June 12, 2009
By jmc99
from northeast pennsylvania
"This transfer switch was extremely easy to install for any one who understands basic electrical circuts. It includes everything needed to complete the installation except for the cable to connect the switch to the generator receptacle and the connectors for the cable. I would recommend useng # 8 awg cable for this connection, the maximun the switch can accomodate, as this will ensure getting optimum power from the generator while allowing just about any length cable run from the switch to the generator location. Just a reminder to everyone, the generator MUST be located outside and away form any opening into your home to avoid a carbon monoxide hazard."

"I was nervous when I bought this, but it was the easiest thing in the world to install. I even had to replace the cord end with the 20 amp adapter that was included.
I should have installed one of these a long time ago! It is so simple and easy to use any one can do it. I had to use it recently and it worked like a charm.
Just start your generator plug it in and flip the switches for the circuts you want to run. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
I absolutly LOVE this product, and if you have a generator you will too. No more extention cords and switching things around, this product is a "MUST HAVE!"

Installation and Use of Transfer Switch,
August 11, 2008
By DanW

"I have found the Reliance Transfer switch installation to be straight forward and as described in the installation guide. Its nice to know the product is as easy to install as it is in use. I have had to use the Transfer switch on two seperate occasions since installation and am glad I had it. With hurricane season well at hand it is a comfort to our family to know we will have a hand up and knowing our electric providers will be safer while restoring power to our home.I feel this system is a must for any home with a stand alone generator."

Great Assurance!!,
August 11, 2008
By WATTIER
from Bowie, MD
"The power grid in my neighborhood has been fairly stable, but the summer storms for this season have become more intense and have resulted in power losses anywhere from a 1/2 hour, to the longest so far of about 8 hours. Running 100-200 plus feet of electrical cords from the generator around the house, during a power outage to the freezer, sump pump, refrigerator, lamps...etc, etc, is no fun - trust me!!
I found the installation of the Reliance Transfer Switch to be one of the smoothest projects I've performed as a do-it-your-selfer.
I have performed many basic wiring additions in my own home and although not an electrician, can tackle most projects once the power is off.
The kit was well supplied with all the needed parts and accessories, the instructions were clear and concise with no guess-work or need to sort through vague interpretations of the process. I also liked the quality of the product and its simplicity.
I do wish though that the "Flush Mount Kit" was included, even at an additional cost, as I was unable to attain it, even through the electrical suppliers in my area.
It is such a great and practical solution to more readily allow backup power to all the essential circuits I'll ever need, without the exorbitant cost of one of those $5000 - $13000 external whole-house generators for which you'll never recoup the cost!!!
A GREAT solution to the average homeowners backup power needs!!!

nice kit,

"Everything packaged together and easy to install. The pre wired pigtail could be 6 - 12" longer. In most cases, there is not much more to buy to install. Some installs could be a little tricky. No problem for most qualified personnel. be safe - hire a licensed Electrician. backfeeding power through a panel could be deadly."

"Great kit, simple to follow. The wiring work inside my house panel box was done is less than an hour. Spent the most time deciding on where to locate the exterior outlet, drilling and mounting to my siding. Only thing not provided is 10-3 wire from exterior outlet to the transfer box and two outlet box clamps."

A must have for the home back-up generator owner,
January 14, 2008
By webted
from Western Washington
"It took ~2 hours to install, which included a little circuit reshuffling. This is not an appropriate first wiring project, and if you aren't comfortable (and competent) working in a LIVE panel then you should pay an electrician to hook it up.
That said, most people with home wiring experience will find this a straightforward, if somewhat tedious, project. Fine Homebuilding #128 has a good overview.
The transfer switch is mounted adjacent to your circuit panel. You should pay attention to the level that you mount it at, so that the armored cable sheath (shown in the above picture) can easily enter your load center (circuit panel) without excessive kinking or twisting.
You need to provide the wire to get from the outdoor receptacle to the transfer switch.
Straightforward wiring instructions are included in the kit. As mentioned before, the wiring is easy, you just need to know how to work in a circuit panel when the cover is off.
Operation is simple. Fire up the generator, plug it into the outdoor panel, go over to your transfer panel and throw each switch. Because these are three-position switches (generator/off/grid load) you don't "leak" power when switching, which makes this NEC compliant.
With this system, you can avoid:
1. Poisoning yourself and your family with carbon monoxide fumes from a generator run indoors (even in a garage!)
2. Electrocuting neighbors, line crews and anyone else that is not expecting power to be coming OUT of your house and into the grid (which is what happens when you plug your generator into a dryer outlet to power the house....)

Reliance Model 31406CRK,
March 8, 2007
By Lionel
from Palmyra, NY
"Transfer switch was easy to install. Selecting either (4) 120V & (1) 220V or (6) 120V circuits was simple. This hard wired version provided a more compact installation adjacent to the circuit breaker panel and did not have bulky cords and plugs extending from the front. The only extra item to buy is the 30 Amp power line (your choice of length) to run between inlet box and transfer switch, which allows for a good deal of flexibility in locating a safe location for the generator to be placed. The 10' supplied 30 Amp power cord to run between generator and inlet box could have been longer, but the additional 20 AMP plug end provides adaptability to smaller generators."

Transfer switch kit,
March 6, 2007
By Deke
from Pueblo, Colorado
"I found myself in the situation of needing a much larger generator to power my 5th wheel travel trailer air conditioning. Having experienced a series of power outages at my home last summer, I decided to look into using the gen plant to power the house in an emergency, as well. I found this kit at Northern, which included everything I needed to install it and connect it to the generator, at a reasonable price, and ordered it. It was, indeed, complete, and all up to code, and even included the cord to connect the generator to the outside weatherproof plug! . Now, with an outage, all I need do is roll the generator out the garage door to the cement pad, fire it up, and plug it in, then flip the switches inside. I needed to buy nothing else. The only thing I could suggest to make it better, would be to increase the circuit number from six to ten, so I could wire a few more house circuits."

Easy to install,
January 3, 2007
By JimonWhidbey

"This is one of those products that is better than expected. The Kit is the way to go, has everything you need to do the installation. I really like the fact everything was pre-wired and the flexible conduit and snap on fitting for the connection to my power panel was really time saving. All wires are clearly identified so even a handiman like myself could complete the job with confidence. If you are planning on doing the installation yourself this is the way to go. Instructions were easy and complete. Took me about 3 hours and I am a not an electrician. If you are handy at all this is fairly easy. The only issue was the meters don't seem to work, even though I wired them correctly. Not a big deal, but would have been nice to have. Good product!"
