"I have used this splitter for over 200 hours and have not hat to repair anything. All i do is tow it to the wood pile start it up (it starts on the first pull) and start cutting. it has plenty of power to split any size log into any size piece of firewood. i have used the four way wedge and strongly reccomend it. The commercial grade 9.5 horse power engine is amazing it gets great gass mileage and will cut forever without running out of fuel.
The best splitter for your money"

Awesome machine..but........1 major Flaw..,
August 9, 2009
"OK, so here is my take on this machine. I had a few minor issues putting the machine together. Having 2 people is probably suggested. I was lucky enough to have a 10 ton hoist at work so that helped a lot. After following the directions for the first step (putting in the wheels) I could not find the washer/cotter pin and dust cover , they are not packed with the wheels. Makes no sense that those items are not packed with the wheels. Other then that, most everything went o kay. I towed the machine to my house (where my family was waiting) and started splitting. I had some tough wood that my other machine could not handle.....it's all split and stacked and ready for the season!!! The only major flaw on this unit as mentioned by others is that with the four way splitter on there, the wood does tend to bind up and thus on the back stroke, stuck wood WILL DAMAGE YOUR GAS TANK!! This is a major design flaw on the unit as my tank was damaged within the first 30 minutes of use. Why it was designed this way is beyond me but the company should create a fix for this problem. The power of the machine is awesome and I would have to say I would recommend this product to anyone serious about splitting a lot of wood. The engine as stated, starts right up and this puppy is surprisingly quiet during operation, nothing beats a Honda. Funny enough, I was at church this morning and telling a friend about the machine. Just so happens his neighbor had a huge tree go down last week and was looking to get rid of all the wood....filled up the Chevy a few hours later and now I have plenty of splitting to do this week. All wood my other machine would never handle. You will not be disappointed in this machine!!!

North Star 37 ton wood splitter.,
July 20, 2009

"I have been exposed to wood splitting for nearly 65 years. I worked with Dad splitting wood with an ax or wedges and a mall.
Then after about 20 years I started to use wood myself and soon found some plans to build a wood splitter on my own. Being a tool maker gave me the confidence to take on the task. I had my Son could cut out the steel plate material from scraps I purchased.
I hired a professional welder to proceed with the major build. I have used that splitter proudly, but it was very slow at splitting. Mainly because of single stage pump and a gear reduced 5 hp motor for the needed power, to drive the 24" long cylinder.
When I walk into Northern Tool the first thing I see is the 37 ton splitter displayed. I have looked at several others through the years, but this one has what I felt was a good complete unit. I like the vertical possition for all the big blocks that a too heavy to handle.
The Honda motor and the 2 stage pump is a great combination along with the engine idle at the end of the back stroke.
I think for some, the ball hitch may be too high for easy transporting if you want to keep it level, yet it is great this way for moving around manually.
If only we had a splitter like this back 65 years ago. To think my Dad and I would have had more time to go fishing."
