Great tool - custom handle makes it better

,
February 6, 2014
By JHlumberjack
from IL
"Used one of these at a sawmill to remove bark from the edge of large planks of lumber, and loved it.
I also purchased one for home use. Overall, it's a great tool, but there are a couple things to note.
1) No handle. It is much easier to control if you weld or bolt a handle sticking off the left side. Be careful though, this puts you closer to the chain. A shroud might be a good idea.
2) Needs more detail on chain selection. It recommends a 16" bar and one size up chain. There are actually different length chains for the same length bar, depending on how tall the bar is, brand, model etc. You have to look at # of links too (also pay attention to thickness of chain). Instead of guessing, take the whole saw into a farm supply store and see if they will let you fit it there.
Be careful not to get too long of one, or it will come off easily. The drive sprocket should be just in front of the end of the bar.
3) I prefer a small chainsaw for use with this. It's easier to control than a large one.
4) I recommend getting a 2nd bar (or saw), so it's easier to change. It gets in the way for some tasks.
I haven't tried it on a full log yet, so I can't speak to that."

Great tool - beats a draw knife

,
December 30, 2012
By ShowMe
from Missouri
"I peeled seven huge cedar logs to use in my home. This tool was the ticket! Others have said that a drawknife is faster - I wonder if they had the chainsaw running? Really, this makes a fine planed finish and short work of peeling a big log. I left the finish as-is, only used a sander in some tight spots. Drawknife left a worse finish, so I tossed it back in the toolbox."

Wizard Peeler

"I had wanted a log wizard for quite a while. I have used them to peel porch rails and half log stairs. I always finish up with a draw knife for a more hand done look, but the wizard gets me there faster. It sure saves on the old elbows."

"This thing works sort of. I can do more quicker with my draw knife. I have worked on a log cabin in the past
the owner would have not allowed me to use this but I though I would give it a try I don't think it is worth the
money

Log Wizard

,
January 16, 2008
By OLA1
from Lookout Mountain, GA
"I had one this log wizards but it got stolen. I bought another one to replace the older one. This new one is a little more dangerous to operate than the previous model, yet still very usefull and efficient.
I have used it for many different jobs including simulating the irregular edge of a plank of wood that has been mill only on two sides. this leaves the edges with the outline shape of the tree trunck that it came from.
The new model is more versatile since it has less protecting cover over the cutting blades, which also makes it more subject ot kick-bak.
Great tool
