This Truper is a Trooper,

"These kind of splitting mauls are not for the faint of heart. They really give you a workout but they do what they are designed to do - split wood. The head never sticks and never comes loose. One should last a lifetime. I'm on my second - ran the first one over with the tractor and bent the handle all to heck!"

12# Splitting Maul,

"The splitting maul I just purchased is my second one. My first maul, after years of service finally failed. The steel handle snapped off. You can abuse this maul and still get years of good service."

"I needed a heavy axe for wood I was cutting for winter. Somenone suggested I use a maul, so I started checking around and found your site. I bought your maul and have been very happy with it ever since I got it. I would highly recomend this tool to all my wood cutiing friends."

"the handle is too short to swing effectively. Useful as a wedge, but not as a maul.
Well, maybe if you are no taller than 5 ft 2 inches, but I am 6 ft."

"I have used this maul to split several cords of wood. I use a 5 pound axe for the smaller pieces and use the maul for the big stuff or problem pieces. Most big pieces split with one hit, maybe two. A longer handle would be a nice upgrade. The rubber grip needed some glue to keep it on. Overall it does the job and has kept me from buying a $1,000. + hydrolic splitter"

great splitter,

"this maul works great for splitting firewood. the only flaws i found with it are the handle seems a little short and the foam grip will slip a little after swinging for awhile. otherwise the tringle head and the 12 lb. weight really help power through the wood without getting stuck in those stubborn pieces."

Had trouble with large hard wood,
August 14, 2008
By Falc
from MA
"It tore through the smaller stuff, but so did my regular maul. I bought this for the big stuff. 16 inches or wider. I found the maul bounced off the wood and the handle wrap slid off the item consistently. The shorter handle negated thsome of the benefit of the heavier maul head. I returned it because my old standby was faster and easier to handle. Granted I could have glued the handle and worked the edge with my file but I knew after 20 minutes it was going back."

"Great splitter for a younger person. Extremely heavy & unwieldy for the retired set to accomplish a full, effective swing. Returned for the 6lb. fiberglass handled Truper splitting maul,"

Excellent tool; Minor shortcomings,
June 9, 2008
By FH00
from Albany, NY
"This splitting maul is the best I've ever owned. However, I was disappointed to find that the handle wasn't the standard length. The handle is a standard one inch pipe, but I found that the handle has a small hole drilled near the end under the handle grip. After cutting that off with a pipe cutter and running it through a pipe threader, a mere 1" coupling and a pipe nipple easily extend the end. I slid the grip back on over the nipple, and it works like a charm."

12 lb maul,
February 18, 2008
By str8edge
from wisconsin
"I have used the original Monster maul for many years until a piece of twisted elm finally did her in. I purchased the truper 12 lb and compared the next week. The maul performance is acceptable when it comes to (wet or dry) red oak and anything of lesser caliber. When it came time to really test her our with twisted elm and knotty white oak, I wasn't nearly as impressed. It still took a little work to get the job done. But when compared to what is available as a maul, it is probably the best available. There were a couple of things about the maul I didn't like. 1) The cushioned grip had a tendancy to want to slip off (nothing a little gorilla glue can't fix). 2) I don't believe the splitting edge is hardened. All in all it is a pretty good wood eater and I believe it will be more than enough for the majority of weekend wood warriors."

the best,

"I purchesed one 25 years ago . I heated my house with wood for 4 years from 78 to early 81and split every log with "THE MAUL" ( as everyone that used it call it), and I think its the best. I bought a new one for my hunting camp in PA. I still use it today.

big but works great,

"As a beginner user it is heavier than I expected but it does an amazing job. If I can't split a log with this maul you need a powered splitter, but as a new user pace yourself and don't hurt yourself. I just needed to put a sharpened edge for some of the pieces."

Nothing Extrodinary,
January 21, 2008
By Donjuan
from Norwell, MA
"Works little better than a conventional Maul. Does not work as advertized for knarley pieces of wood, or logs wit lots of knots.
Head is welded on so it can't loosen and come off, however, handel grip foam pad slips off easily. It works, but I'm dissapointed because I expected better performance."

12-Lb. Splitting Maul w/Steel Handle,
January 14, 2008
By Stihl025
from Cecil, PA
"Good solid maul for the money. The rubber handle does not fit securely and has a tendency to slide off when using, but with a little Gorilla glue, problem was solved. Overall construction is good, good welds at the handle. Most mauls are only 30 inches in length, but an additional 6 inches would be nice for better leverage. 4 stars only because of the rubber handle."

Two problems,
November 26, 2007
By w00dsplitte5
"There are two problems with this maul. One: the steel shaft bends (I suspect it's due to stress), and it doesn't take many cords before this starts to happen. Two: the rubber handle slips off, and it's a real nuisance to keep pushing back on with each swing. This maul splits like mad; if the manufacturer fixes these two problems I'd rate it a 5."
