It's cast iron not steel.

" I didn't understand the difference between cast iron and steel as far as anvil went. I never used an anvil other than the small one on my vice and this just wasn't going to work for what I needed to make. The anvil is heavy enough to be functional but for heavy use cast iron isn't what you need. I put a hard piece of steel on to of the anvil anchoring it with four recessed screws. Now it has the clang and durability of a blacksmith's anvil and 1/5 the cost of what a smilair weight steel anvil would cost. I don't know how well the recess screw are going to work but they seem to be doing fine after making four wagon wheels. "

no quality control

" After I spent 2 hours hand grinding the face and another 2 hours grinding the base the anvil finally was flat enough to sit level and flat enough on top to use. Now it works well for my needs. However, it could use more of a radius on the horn edges. "

A better door-stop

,

By TrebuchetMetal

" This anvil is definitely not appropriate for anyone wanting to really forge steel. There is pretty much no rebound to speak of, and it is easily dinged if you miss the work and hit the anvil. No pritchel, no hardy. I think that you'd be better off using a piece of rail from a railroad as an anvil rather than this thing. But if you have nothing else available, it might make do until you can find (or afford) a decent anvil.
The coyote might enjoy this anvil as it seems easy enough to throw it off a cliff.

60# anvil

,
February 18, 2010
By woodreaux
from The Sunbelt(Brandon,Mississippi)
" This is a first...I don't like the anvil. First of all, the anvil is PAINTED! Blacksmithing requires the use of hot metals which melt paint. Secondly, the quality just isn't there, the step of the anvil is uneven and shallow. The horn is poorly shaped and finished. Every other product from Northern Tools has been highly satisfying in quality. Guess you can't win them all! "

ASO

,
August 19, 2008
By Metalthumper
from Farmington, NC
" This is NOT for the serious or even intermediate blacksmith. This is what blacksmiths refer to as an ASO or avil-shaped object. It works fine for straightening out blades for your mower or the occasional pounding on some type of metal, but has NO rebound so you get to do double the work! BUT for the money and for occasional use, it is fine keeping these "qualifiers" in mind. "

NOT FOR THE BLACKSMITH

,
April 22, 2008
By dwbutersr
from Mocksville, North Carolina
" If you are a blacksmith, this will do until you get a real anvil. Rebound is non-existant and has no hardy or pritchel. Pritchel can be drilled into it with minimum of difficulty. This got me out of a pinch while waiting on a real anvil; and for the price, you can't beat it. For those who are not blacksmiths, this is probably ideal. It's inexpensive and does not have a really loud "ring" to it. Would work well on the farm or in the mechanics shop. "

" This anvil easily meets basic requirements and is a great buy for the price. The table is not milled flat and has no holes for tools. The horn is wide and flat which makes it difficult to shape stock with. "

" I needed an anvil to straighten out my cutter blades on my tractor mower deck. This anvil did just fine, and was priced just right, straighten out all the blades.
It's solid enough for beating on metal..

anvil?

April 17, 2007
By blksmth

" This is an anvil like object
the problem is that this is not a steel anvil it is made of cast iron
If you are looking for an anvil this is not it, if you are looking for something heavy to pound on, this will do and it is reasonably priced. "
