outstanding value,

"I recently purchased two of your needle guns. One as a back-up. However after almost thirty hrs. of usage the first needle gun is still going strong and should finish the job of scaling off globs of rust from a decorative iron fence. It has easily taken off old primer, paint and rust down to bare metal. I never expected such a quality product for the price. If it's bare metal your looking for, then this is the tool. Thank-you for delivering such an outstanding product!"

"As a wholesale/retail store, I have to purchase the best for my money. Which also means that the customer won't be coming back with complaints that would get costly for me to handle. Northern Industrials Air Needle Scaler 15763 meets all the criteria that my customers demand. I have never had a single scaler come back as defective in all the years I've been selling them."

Air Needle Scaler,
July 20, 2009
By nahte2003

"I bought a needle scaler last week and I consider it one of my best tools after using it. I restore tractors and equipment as a hobby and part-time business. I used this scaler on an old work tractor and in about 4-6 hours time I had all the rust and old paint removed. This job usually took me 3-4 days the way I used to do it. Most of the metal was ready to prime after I used the scaler. I wished I had discovered this tool years ago. When I have rust or paint removal from now on, I am reaching for my Northern Needle Scaler to do the job. You can adjust the amount of air right at the tool for hard or soft needle impact. It does a great job at a right price. Thank you Northern Tool."

Am I using this wrong?,
May 4, 2009

"This tool does a great job but it didn't last long for me. It doesn't require a high CFM and you can get into nooks and crannies with it pretty well. Removing paint from aluminum, the first attachment lasted 6 hours and the second one lasted 8 hours. I'm surprised that someone has used one for over 30 hours. How do you make the scaler attachments last that long? My pistons loosen up and the needles fall out in one day. Also, I couldn't get the second scaler attachment off to replace it with a third one.
When it's working, it's one of the most useful tools that I have.
I'm very satisfied with the service from Northern Tool. Wish you had a store near me.

"I have been working with metal for over 15 years, and I can't believe this is the first time I have ever got my hands on a needle scaler! I bought it for busting the slag off the welds on a large steel building skeleton I have been building (about 120 pounds of 7018 rods burned so far). This tool works great! It makes a god-awful noise, but ears can be protected while it does its magic."

"i bought this item after using a larger needle scaler i borrowed from a buddy. for the price, it is a great tool for the occasional user. if you plan on heavy use or larger truck frames & such, buy the larger inline from either astro , northern or ingersoll. this unit is perfect for auto / light truck frames. fits in tighter spaces due to the pistol grip design."

"Like others before me, I too was in the Navy and have extensive expeience with these tools. I needed one to remove the bad rust in the bed of my 1973 pickup but I had to find one that didn't use very much CFMs because my compressor is not very big. This "needle gun" worked better than I expected, it knocked the rust off with little effort and only a few holes where the metal was too thin."

Perfect small job scaler,

"I bought this tool for use in removing 50 years of paint from the decorative metal handrail in front of or home. It went to work with little prep time and made the 7 layers of paint removal easy. It left a surface ready for primer and two top coats of paint. Even our mailman said the railing looked brand new after I finished painting the last coat on. Excellent tool and easy to use. Great work out too!"

Does the job well,
November 17, 2008
By jjmrascal

"I got this needle gun to help me knock paint from some ironwork of my 1960 home. The ironwork had several layers of poor paint jobs with rust coming through. This tool works well. It may not be as good as a $300 model but will get the job done. One thing I noticed was that it needs to be oiled a bit more regularly than what the owner's manual says. It says to do it hourly but I find while using it that every 15 - 20 minutes works better.
The tool works best on the flat portions of the ironwork while the detailed "floral" design work takes a bit more time to get into all the spots. I am half way done with the project and have used it heavily. I have been surprised at how well the needle head has been holding up.
One more thing, my air compressor is a 17 year old Craftsman 4hp 5 gallon model and this tool is the max draw I would put on it. The compressor keeps up but must run all the time while in use to maintain pressure.

Air Needle Scaler,
August 19, 2008
By OldSalt
from Goldvein, VA
"I have extensive experience with this type of tool from my time in the U.S. Navy. "Needle guns" are great for removing paint, rust and scale from metal surfaces while leaving the good metal intact.
I purchased this tool to prep my 5 foot lawnmower deck for repainting. It was the only model rated low enough (4 CFM @ 90 PSI) for my 33 gallon air compressor.
The actuator rod that drives the needles sheered off at around 5 hours of use. Northern Tool was extremely gracious and efficient about replacing the defective part though. I didn't even have to send the defective one back, and had the new one at my door in 4 days.
The results this tool delivered were impressive. If you've ever looked under an old lawnmower deck you know what a mess they can be. I had scale almost a quarter of an inch thick built up around the drive shafts and this tool took it right down to good metal.
Heat build up in this tool is substantial but manageable. It cools down while the compressor is recharging. I was getting about 10 minutes of continuous run time between compressor recharges. I know that sounds tedious, but the objective was to save all the remaining good metal and this tool does just that.
If you exercise some patience, even larger jobs can be accomplished. For the smaller jobs, this is DEFINITELY the way to go. The price is unbeatable as is the warranty. I would recommend this tool for anyone with a smaller capacity air compressor.

Needle Scaler Review,
August 11, 2008
By sccrooks

"A tremendous timesaver, but be sure to buy hearing protection if you don't already have it...this is a noisy tool.
Bought to work on restoring antique tractors and it does a tremendous job of getting old paint (often very heavy coats) off cast parts...does not work well on sheet metal ...metal vibrates too much.
Can't be beat for the price.
