"Before buying I read all of the customer reviews and was glad I did. My need for the cart was to carry firewood from my outside quonset to my basement. I had to be able to easily fill and wheel it about fifty feet and walk it down 6 concrete steps. Here are my comments good and bad.
Rust and finish- The cart does come unfinished and is rusty in spots. Prime and paint prior to assembly. Enough high quality Rust-oleum paint will cost you about $15. The paint will get knicked up so attach a piece of quarter inch plywood (17.5" x 17.5") to the bottom of the stacking area. You will have to position the board and drill your own holes. Then cover the inside of the stacking area with a plastic runner by attaching using the front and back plate bolts.
Directions- These leave a lot to be desired. I assembled this myself without much difficulty. However, from the parts list (how many people know what a M6x40 bolt is?) to the assembly, should be rewritten. My kingdom for a good technical writer who writes directions! Study the diagram and rely on it more than the step-by-step. Hint: Read and remember the note "Do not completely tighten screws until the assembly is completed". Especially the eight bolts holding the back plate and the frame pieces.
Design- (1) Add a pair of 1" round heavy duty rubber leg pads to the bottom most part of the lower frame where it comes into contact with the ground, and your floor. Once again you will have to drill your own holes. Use the kind of pad that has a counter sunk center hole with 3/4 inch sheet metal screws. This will protect your floor as well as protect the cart from wear. (2)The way the wheels fit over the axle is sloppy. They wobble back-and-forth because of the play in the hub. A fitted bushing to tap over the axle would be much better. This is my biggest concern for longevity. Only time will tell. Add some grease to the axle before putting on the wheels.
Even with all of the extra work I did in modifications I would buy it again. Ninety five percent of my heat comes from my wood stove and I burn about three cords a year. It has reduced my handling of the wood by 75%."

CART ARRIVED RUSTY!!!,
October 15, 2009
By WeBurnWood
from Long Island, NY
"We got our cart this week, and had the same exact experience as one of the other reviewers: the cart parts arrived rusted, and chipped. This is supposed to be GALVANIZED STEEL; this is supposed to take years and years of outdoor use to eventually rust. If it arrives rusty, there's no way this will survive the winter.
How is it possible for an item to arrive rusty, if it's new? We've order other items from Northern Tool, each time with good results. But this is really below average. We did not want Northern to replace it, as it looked so inferior."

RUSTY HEAVY DUTY GALVANIZED STEEL,
September 29, 2009
By OrcasHandyman

"I received this log cart today (09/29/2009).
Unacceptable new product quality!
The “heavy duty galvanized steel” was scratched/rubbed and rusted, and many other places were simply rusted through the finish. The packing sleeves had grease on them, and the tires simply stink up the house (as in smell).
The first quality failure I have experienced with Northern -- what does your's look like after a year of use???"

Carry your logs up steps,
July 20, 2009
By hank419

"I bought one of these carts in 2004 specifically to haul fire wood up the stairs of my deck to the log rack I had up there. It has worked great. The design is such that it doesn't hang on the steps & the wheels are large enough to roll up the steps with ease. One modification I made was to add a wooden platform to prevent smaller logs from falling through.
It was a great improvement over the Vermont Cart I was using, which is great on the ground, but not designed to go up the stairs.
I have also used it to haul groceries up the stairs."

"At last, a product for my wife! Our woodpile is far from our house and my wife used to refuse to go and "fetch the wood." This was a problem as I work rotating shifts and was constantly going out, usually half asleep, at odd times of the day and night, in crazy weather to "fetch the wood." I ordered the Log Cart thinking it would make the job easier for me. When it arrived, I had worked all night, so I set the package aside and went to bed. Imagine my shock when I awoke, hours later, and found the Log Cart sitting in the living room not only put together but full of wood! Yes! My wife loves it so much she now volunteers to "fetch the wood!" It makes the job of carrying large quantities of wood so much easier! I quickly seized the moment and ordered another one! No more "sleepwalking" to the woodpile for me!"

Good cart for the money,
March 16, 2009
By MJHofVermont
from Northern Vermont
"I purchased this cart to haul firewood from the stack in my basement to my multi-fuel furnace. I have been doing this with a home-made cart for years but I have to clear a four-inch step, and reasoned that the large wheels on this cart would be helpful in clearing that step. This log cart works well for that application; I roll my firewood right up to the furnace door and when the cart is empty, I go back for another load. My only note of caution is that this cart will not work for wood under sixteen inches in length. One could easily modify the cart to accomodate shorter pieces if necessary."

Wish it were more durable,

"I bought this cart for my husband after he was injured last year. It worked fine initially allowing him to transfer wood from our outdoor stack to the indoors. I was given much praise for the purchase. Unfortunately the praise was short lived. We now have wheels that continuously go flat. It seems the spokes push right into the rubber. If only we could find tires that were more heavy duty."

"I bought this cart because of the wheel size and have not been disapointed. It easily climbs steps and hauls wood over rough terrain or through a few inches of snow."

Wonderful cart!,
December 2, 2008
By gayle67X

"I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my husband in 2007 after looking extensively on-line and comparing prices. This cart was by far the best one for the money. We heat our house with a woodburning stove, and my husband loves the cart; he brings wood from the woodpile in a wheelbarrow and stacks 2 to 3 day's supply at a time on a covered porch. From there he brings it into the house using this cart, and it mostly stays inside as a "log crib". It holds a good supply of wood, is safe on hardwood floors, and is easy to maneuver. My only suggestion for an improvement would be to have a solid base to prevent wood scraps from littering the floor, although I've still given it a rating of 5. We solved this by having a piece of carpet runner cut at a home store (60 inches will give you a single layer of carpet), which my husband mounted by sandwiching the carpet ends between wood strips, and fixing the wood strips to the top ends of the cart's frame. Problem solved, and the cart couldn't be better!"

Easy to Assemble; Great on the Steps,
November 17, 2008
By tsiyvwiya
"Received the log cart within a short period of time from Northern Tools.
The cart was easy to assemble, taking only about thirty minutes to put together.
The large wheels made it easier to bring the cart (loaded with wood) up four steps onto the deck. This is a rather nice convenience. Gave it four stars because the material used to make the cart does not stand out as a distinct plus although materials are certainly adequate.

Indispensable!,
April 21, 2008
By Morris05661

"This cart is an excellent way to get wood from the pile/stack to the stove or furnace. We use it to actually hold the wood like a mini-crib once we get it into the house. Since we heat a 3,000 sq ft house primarily with a wood boiler, transport from outside to inside is a serious issue for us, and this cart really fit the bill through the 7 cords we burned this winter.
The pneumatic tires allow for easy rolling over unpaved terrain or even through a few inches of snow. The design of the cart makes it easy to load and the large wheel size makes pushing it easy, even when fully loaded..
The only caveat is that short lengths must be placed on top of full length legs since the cart has no bottom plate/floor to prevent short logs from falling through.

"I have always struggled with moving firewood from tree to pile, one pile to another, and pile to house. This cart does the job in all circumstances with minimum effort. My wife has no trouble hauling a full load up porch steps and over obstacles. Good balance and weight distribution. Sturdily made and finished."

log cart,

"Very good design, hardware package is adequate, but should not allow so many sharp ends to protrude. Easily changed for the better by substituting locknuts and sawing off excess bolt length. Otherwise excellent. The load area does not interfere with wheels, small footprint and narrow width navigates tight spaces/doors easily, but is quite stable nevertheless. Large wheels climb stairs and thresholds easily. Also easy to add a thin plywood base and ends to corral shorter sticks and minimize wood trash falling on the floor. The best system for getting wood into the house I have found. Bought one for my brother in law, I liked mine so well."

Great Back saver,
April 14, 2008
By PineKap

"I have owned this product for about 6 months now. So far it has worked great. I Keep my firewood about 20 yards from the house. In order to get the wood to house i need to go over dirt and up some stairs, This cart works great for both. I can now load up the house with fire wood in 2 trips rather than 10 carring it in my arms.
The only drawback is that smaller pieces can fall between the rack. This can be solved by adding some metal or some type of screen.
I would recomend this product to anyone who tends to use allot of firewood.

"I had been looking for a wood cart like this one, and searched quite extensively on the internet. All of the others that I found were priced quite a bit higher than this one. I have been using this cart now since November '07, and it is very sturdy and really well built. I am very pleased, and my only regret is that I didn't buy one yrs ago. Don't be afraid of this cart because it sells a bit cheaper than others......it will hold up and do a great job hauling your wood. Very pleased!"

Heavy duty log cart,
January 16, 2008
By FiremanBob
from Cascade Idaho
"I purchased the log cart prior to the 2007/2008 wood heating season because the wood shed at our new home is located about 50 feet from the front door and carrying armloads of wood all winter got old very fast last season.
When I saw Northern Tool's wood cart on their on-line catalog I was impressed with what I saw but looked around on the internet prior to purchasing and what I found elsewhere appeared to be of lower quality and higher price.
Once I recieved my new log cart I was impressed at how easy it was to assemble and how "beefy" it actually is. We heat a 1500 square foot home solely with wood heat and I am able to fill my wood bin with one load on the wood cart where I was previousley having to carry four to five armloads to fill the bin, thus saving many trips back and forth to the wood shed but also much easier on my back.
I highly reccommend this product to anyone who heats with wood. It is solid enough to do the job it was intended for and looks good enough that you could use it as a "wood bin" to stand next to your wood stove or fire place until the next load of wood is needed.
