"I purchased this real a year ago and it has been hanging in my garage and what a step saver it is. I have used it to power my vacuum cleaner for the car, my shop vac and leaf blower to give me a little extra maneuvering room. It is a step saver that is really appreciated. When finished just roll back up and forget it until next time. Installation was a snap, and shipping was great. Couldn't be happier."

"I was always so mad when i found that someone had taken my extension cord from my shop. With this product my problem was solved. I attached the retractable cord reel to the ceiling in the very center of the shop, just above head hight. There has not been a single time since I received this cord reel that it has been somewhere else. It has a nice heavy duty cord with three receptacle socket that is capable of handling multiple tools. The 40 foot cord allows plenty of coverage and is never in the way when it is stored. No more safety issues with cords lying on the floor to trip me. It is simple to put away when your project is finished and the best part of all, it is always there when you need it"

Reel doesn't retract properly,

"If you just want an extension cord just buy a plain extension cord. If you want a RETRACTABLE extension cord, don't buy this one. The retraction mechanism needs so much help it would be easier to just use an extension cord.
The 12 AWG cable and connectors are great, but the retraction trouble totally offsets this advantage. Even though the product is inexpensive, it's not worth the continued hassle of fighting it each time.
This product is DEFINITELY NOT Industrial Quality as advertised"

"I purchased two of these, one for use in my garage and one in my shop. I could not be happier. I mounted both on the ceilings. Installation was quick and easy.
Yes, the rewind takes a little playing with, but they do rewind fully every time and without a bunch of hassle. It would be difficult to find a better product for the money."

Northern Industrial Retractable Cord Reel — 40Ft.,,

"I installed the Cord Reel in the middle of my garage ceiling. There are outlets in the wall but with this in the middle it is a lot easier to grab the end of the cord and pull it out than unwind an extenion cord every time. It is very heavy duty and the 3 outlets on the end are handy. I noticed that it does need a little help retracting, I think it could have used a stronger spring or I the cord is to heavy. But overall I am happy with it."

"I had been shopping around for an electrical cord reel for awhile when I found this one on sale. I chose this particular product because the cord was heavy enough to operate most of the equipment in my shop, 12 guage, I could plug in up to three separate tools at one time, and it was nicely priced. However, the reel housing is plastic, and the reel mechanism doesn't have enough umph to it to pull the cord in without alot of assistance. You get what you pay for. I forsee replacing this one probably sooner than later, and I won't hesitate to spend some money next time."

"I purchased this retractable cord reel back in October. Mounting it was quick and easy, though I would have preferred they provided the hardware. I had to make a special trip for lag bolts. The casing and guide rollers seem cheap, and I expect problems with that down the line. For now it works as described, and is incredibly more convenient than having an extension cord lying on the garage floor.
One other thing to be aware of. I went with the 12 gauge cord. When retracting it fully, if its not evenly distributed on the reel, it will stack up and hit the case. So it can take some "wiggling" to retract all the way."

High expectations; low results,

"I purchased this reel in spite of the fact that several ratings have indicated that the reel will not wind the cord up completely. I mounted it and the first time I tested it I had to fight it just to get it to retract completely. I discovered that the enclosed case is not large enough to accomodate the provided cord length unless it is rolled up evenly. This is impossible to accomplish while standing on the floor of your garage with the unit hanging from the ceiling. I give the unit 2 stars only due to the fact that it was a breeze to hang. Simply locate your ceiling joist and tap on in. Two lag bolts later and bam you are ready to start your struggle with getting your cord reel to work as it is supposed to.
Bottom line: if you do not have enough frustrations in life and want some more then buy one of these, install it and use it regularly. You will have plenty of frustration!! For myself, I returned mine. Northern offers many "open" reel designs; I may try one of those next."
