"I’m a professional stairbuilder and utilize a lot of steel components in the structural design of my staircases. I needed a Mig welder that was light enough to move around on the jobsite yet had enough power and capacity to weld heavy steel all day long. The Hobart Handler 187 MIG Welder 230 volt handled the task required beautifully. The photos show how well it performs in all position continuous welding. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a compact machine to do serious welding."

Great welder,

"This is a great little machine within it's capacity. It has excellent control at the lower settings yet is still able to weld heavier metal at the top end without breaking a sweat. Several other machines I have used in this class (price range) either work well on the top settings or on the bottom settings (the Hobart 180 suffered from this), but it is rare to find one that works well throughout the whole range. The Hobart 187 does just that though, and at a great price.
So far I have used it with .35 flux core and .35 solid core with 75/25 gas and it works better than I expected when I bought it with either. I would have no hesitations buying another if for some reason I needed to.
I can't think of anything negative to say about this machine, as long as what you need to do falls within it's abilities, you will not be dissappointed.
Mike"

Hobart 170,

"I bought this welder about a year ago and love it. I'm converting a drag-race car to a pro-street car and tried to "get away" with a stick welder and 110v mig. Only regret is I whish I'd bought this machine sooner. It was extremely easy to set up and start using - took only a few minutes. It has welded thin sheetmetal and some pretty thick-walled tubing without a single problem. Well worth every single dollar!"

"I purchased this unit I replaced a 110 volt craftsman unit that was very well used and getting tired. At first I was going to purchase the Handeler 210. In the end decided that I didnt need the optional quick change spoolgun so I opted for the Handeler 187. this is a great welder and very portable. The welds look great with 75/25 gas :-)"

"I am a welded steel sculptor and have used a Hobart 180/187 for several years. It easily handles steel up to 5/16"T. An excellent value. Never failed me. I have used it with shielding gas and without. Easy to change spool; easy to change amps/feed rate.
The only problems I have had is that (1) the switch on the gun failed after 2 years; needed to replace it. Simple to replace. (2) Also after much heavy use the switch wires where they enter the welder body have separated within gun cable (inside). Needed to resolder these 2X. Easy, quick fix. Very good value for usage."

Excellent welder solid product,
July 15, 2009
By MacDave06

"I bought this welder a couple years back to modify the frame on my project truck. I had used lincolns comparable MIG unit as well as one of their smaller flux core models on steel, and a much larger Miller 350 on aluminum while I was learning. The hobart machines are very much comparable to miller other than the price (why I bought my hobart over a miller 180). It uses a miller gun so parts are easy to come by, though I have yet to need them. I cant say how well it welds with flux core but for GMAW its great. I've welded up to 1/4 inch with .030 wire and the welds are solid, I'd imagine they'd bite even more with .035. All in all I have probably 75-80 hours on this machine with no complaints yet. I definately reccomend buying this welder if youre looking to do automotive welding. Exhaust to chassis it'll weld it."

"This is one of the best wire welders you can buy for any amount. I farm about 1400 acres of corn/wheat/soybeans and hay in southern kentucky. I use this machine to repair everything from sheet metal on equipment to heavy steel repair and fabrication.
I also work maintenance at the county detention center. We used this welder to weld steel beds together to make bunk beds. Using this machine 8 hours a day, it never gave me any problems.
Also, Northern Tool was fantastic helping me with the purchase and recomending all of the needed extras."

"Been very happy with the unit I replaced a 110 volt unit that wasn't up to what I needed it to do.
Bigger is always better but this is a good compromise between size/cost and function.

"I do suspension and chassis work on race trucks and this welder has the power to get that complete fusion, toe to toe. Small and easily stored makes this product a great welder for any DIYer to a professional shop. And with the 5/3/1 warranty along with its better than medeocre 30% cycle, was worth they extra money for an entry level 220v transformer.
Im very pleased with what I have and Im sure you will to."

Great Welder,
November 21, 2008
By BigBird

"I haven’t had much, well any, experience welding before I purchased this welder. I was amazed at how easy it was to get set up. I was making good welds in no time, once I hooked up a bottle. With the flux core wire, I had inconsistent, spattery welds. Of course I attribute 100% of this to lack of experience. Once I had a bottle on it, I was laying down strong welds that looked pretty good. I made a mountain bike mounting system for the back of the truck and I have absolutely no worries that the welds will fail and send thousands of dollars in bikes to their death. Now I am constantly looking for excuses to use the welder."

one amazing machine,
November 20, 2008

"I am a owner of a welding shop in Moab, Utah. A couple of years ago I bought a Hobart 180 to do handrails and smaller jobs. I got a modification of a trackhoe bucket. My 180 is only rated to weld up to 3/8" thick steel. The bucket was to be modified for reclamation work. It was only 3 ft wide and needed to be 9 ft wide. I found some 1" thick and 1/2" thick steel. With a little preheating I welded this bucket together with the 180 I thought I would do my root passes and filler passes with the mig and then weld it out with my Lincoln Pipeliner 250 but, the job got moved up 3 weeks. They needed the bucket ASAP . I told the the guy that I didnt know if the welds would hold because it wasnt welded out . The guy came back after the job was finished and told me that the bucket was still working. That was pretty amazing regarding the abuse that the bucket went through. I have done lots of work with my welder, it is a really good , tough machine. The only problen I have ran into is that I have had to change the nozzle tip once"

Hobart Handler is Handy,

By 51FordF2

"I purchased the Hobart Handler 187, specifically for bodywork on a 1951 Ford truck that I am restoring. This welder FAR exceeds my expectations, and makes me look like I have a lot more experience than I do.
Operation is very easy, and settings are accurate. Everything needed, with the exception of an argon tank, is included in the box, and I was up and running within 10 minutes of opening the box. I have yet to make a bad weld with the Handler,
On my truck, I am using the Handler extensively, welding in 18 gauge steel patches and panels, both butt welds and plug welds. The Handler allows me precise control, with thin sheet metal. However, I have built several jigs and tools, as well as a metal workbench, using 1/4" and 3/8" flat and angle steel, and the welds are just as good, with great penetration.
I would heartily recommend the Handler 187...in fact, I already have, to anyone who would listen!"

Great Little Welder,
November 19, 2008
By ahatcher
"I've owned Hobart welders for several years now. Never a problem and this wire-feed is no exception. For the serious hobbiest, this is the perfect MIG. The heat setting of 3 is more than enough to weld 1/4" material together while never hitting the duty cycle. You can weld and weld and keep on welding for as long as you can hold a steady bead.
Buy it! You'll love it!"

"This is my first wire welder so I don't have any previous experience to draw upon except of course stick welding but I am very happy with the performance of this machine. I have welded pieces up to one half inch thick and I have used both the flux core and solid wire with excellent results. I would recommend this welder to anybody, both novice and expert!"

"Have a Hobart Handler for a year now. Works great and is easily adjusted to the metal being welded. I am a mechanic by trade and is very usefull from a quick exhuast system welds to building roll bars and rocker skids for off road vehilces. Has great penetration for thicker metals and can be adjusted for thin sheet metal without burning through."

Hobart Handler 187,
November 18, 2008
By Sparky08
from Woodbury, CT
"I have been welding for over 20 years and this is the best non commerical welder I have ever used. I changed to gas and solid core wire because I think this provides a higher quality weld and it generally looks better.
The machine is very flexable, using on heavy metal down to sheet metal. I had a Hobart Handler 120 before getting the 187 and its like night and day!
When welding thin materials the wire feed works at low voltage setting where the 120 would not.
This is great all round maching for the serious hobbiest and even professional use.
