Great bang for the buck

" I bought this generator head because I had an old Coleman Powermate with a perfectly good GX390 (13HP) Honda motor (made in Japan version), but the generator head it came with put out terrible power quality. I measured over 12.5% THD with a Fluke 43B power quality analyzer which was bad enough I didn't want to hook it to my house for fear of damaging any expensive electronics (TV's, fridge, dishwasher, etc) in my house. These replacement generator heads are made by Mecc Alte which is a very high quality manufacturer (they are often found in portable construction light towers or in commercial power backup applications). The generator head is brushless (basically maintenance free) and claimed to put out less than 6% THD in their literature (great for electronics). First impression is this thing is HUGE and seems to be very well built. I was able to get it mated to the motor fine (make sure your motor has the SAE J609B crankshaft end - most generators do). I also had a bit of trouble because the generator head support mount underneath was in a slightly different place so plan on needing to make a new mount to support the generator head when doing this on yours. I would have liked to have slightly longer leads on the wires (2ft would have been better) or it would have been nice to have a lug/terminal system in the generator head so you could just create your own leads, but I was able to splice it to the existing wiring on the generator just fine. Best of all was when I loaded up the generator the highest THD I measured was just under 4% (below 5% is excellent) and the engine held a nice stable frequency/voltage output right up until the breaker tripped. I would also suggest adding a digital frequency/voltage meter to your generator panel as well so you can get you engine speed adjusted perfectly to put out the best power quality possible. I did also notice that setting frequency to exactly 60Hz I only got 117V per leg so I set engine speed in order to get 120V per leg and that only increased frequency to 60.5Hz (fully acceptable for most electronics). So all in all I couldn't have been happier and we are now finally ready for the next power outage......definitely recommend if you need a good quality replacement generator head. "

" Purchased this to run as a side by side generator. Ex. Belt driven 1:1 ratio. Had to machine few parts as this head is a motor mounted unit. Was able to use an existing motor that I had and this style generator to save some money. Once completed I ran through tests and put away in corner for a bad rainy day. The generator sat for 1 year till needed and worked flawlessly. Very pleased with this unit. No cons. "
