A good stove for the money,
October 22, 2009
By smokeybear
from Providence, Rhode Island
"I used this stove all last winter. At first it was difficult to light and fire up strong.
3 problems:
The insulation in the upper body causes a blockage. Smoke will come out towards the room when the door is opened. Not much but who wants any smoke in the house.
Secondly, the wood actually burns too slow and causes a lot of creosote buildup in the exhaust pipe.
Third, the fire box looks bigger than it really is because of the reburn tubes at the top.
So I removed the tubes and the insulation. Now the stove holds more wood and burns like any other airtight stove. I can fill it before bed and it burns for several hours. 8 hours later, it's still hot. I would buy again."

good for small cabins,

"I bought this heater recently and I am very unhappy with it. It does last along time but there is one small problem. It dont heat very well. I have about 1100 squar foot home and it only keeps it around 55 degrees when the mornings are cold and are around the teens. The old wood heater I had was smaller and worked better. This wood heater also takes awhile to get going."

Slow Start, but very happy,
February 3, 2009
By John13579

"When I first got this stove, it was smaller than I had originally thought. Which was fine by me! It does have a large firebox that allows for less cutting and splitting. This is my first wood stove, so getting everything set up with a chimney and smoke pipe was a bit tricky. For the first 3 weeks I could not keep a fire going, but soon after I figured out my problems, I began to realize it was not the stove itself, but the chimney and connections. Once I figured that out, I have been able to get this stove burning bright! I can put 2-3 logs on in the evening and it'll last for at least 10-12 hours and still have a nice bed of coals left over. I just throw a few smaller logs in and they flame right up! Overall, this stove is easy to use, not hard to get started (once you know what you're doing) and will burn for hours nice and bright. I'm using it to heat my kitchen and dining room, since they are an addition to the house, they are heated with electric rather than coal. The two rooms together are about 500 square feet, and there is no problem keeping those two rooms at or above 75 degrees. The weather here has gotten down to 0 a few times and those two rooms stayed nice and warm during the day. During the night, it cools off a bit, but I keep the dampers almost completely shut. The rooms get down to 65 degrees. This stove should have no problem heating up to another 500 square feet or more.
If you're looking for an economical stove, and if you have the patience to get it right, this stove will perform wonderfully. It has some downfalls, the handle on the door tends to get loose, but can easily be tightened up with a wrench. Also the damper control lever unscrews easily, but that's a very simple twist and fix. The Turbo Burn tubes are a bit of an inconvenience when loading up the fireplace, if you bump them it makes quite a racket. But they seem to be tough, I've hit them a few times and no damage. Also, when I got the stove, there was a wool insulating blanket that is between the firebox and top of stove, I took that out because I felt that it was slowing the smoke flow to the stovepipe. I don't know if this is necessary, the people at Vogelzang said it didn't matter if it was in, but that it was supposed to be. I took it out and it's still working fine, so...
This stove seems like it will get me through a good number of years. I'm very happy with my purchase, and Northern is a great company. Good customer service is key and they definately have it."

Staying warm so far...,
December 5, 2008
By SCOTTIEJ
from Lake George New York
"I purchased this unit back in September and has been burning almost everyday since. It is now December and staying much colder now, and the stove is working very well. It was pretty simple to set up, took longer to install the double wall stove pipe on the outside of the house. Make sure your math is correct when determine the proper height for your draft requirments, I think most negative reviews might have made errors in this department. It is a little hard to load, I raised the unit one foot with solid 16x8 concrete blocks, which makes it a lot easier to open and load from one knee. The turbo burn tubes get in the way when you fill unit at bedtime, but it burns almost all night. I'm still trying to dial her in, but its going longer each night. 8-9 hrs. Adjusting the front air flow is the trick As with any stove it takes a little time to find the perfect burn zone or sweet spot .I live in upstate new york and last winter spent almost two thousand bucks on propane, so far this year we have not needed a full fill up only $100.00 so far. We'll see when the cold is here to stay. It is located in the basement and we let the heat rise up into the bedrooms above, and keeps the upstairs at 68-71 almost all day. Downstairs its 73-75. So for now I'm happy with it, hope it stays that way, I would recommend this stove, good price and function."

great product!,

"I am very impressed with this product. I work long hours and the 12 hr. burn time is incredible! It throws an incredible amount of heat when needed and you can regulate the burn very easily. I have only been using it for 2 months, but all of the claims made by the manufacturer are true! We will see how it does when the sub-zero weather arrives here in N.H.
I have had only a couple problems with this product. 3 of the refractory brick were damaged in shipping and the door gasket fell off during operation. Otherwise this would have been a 5 star review. I highly recommend Vogelzang products to anyone. I am going to replace my older model Russo stove with another Vogelzang product. Great value, great product!!!

"We really like the stove, but getting it started was a bear and kept filling the house with smoke until we installed an auto-draft fan on the stovepipe (model Tjernlund auto-draft model AD-1). Since we have a straight up stovepipe with no other draft complications, it is frustrating that the stove is so difficult to draft (we suspect because of the way the air flows to the front, then back along the top plenum for the more efficient burn). With the addition of the auto-draft fan, it is wonderful. It really does burn for 10-12 hours, and heats our 1,300 square house nicely (so far it's been down to 19 degrees outside overnight, and we haven't had to get up to recharge the wood in the stove)."

Durango wood stove,
November 18, 2008
By JackF

"I ordered the Durango wood stove from California thinking it would take two weeks to a month to recieve it, I was wrong, it arrived in four days. It was very easy to assemble. It is well built and looks good. After the initial seasoning of the paint I was able to lower the heat level. If loaded at night it it burned for 10 hours on low. My wood consumption was cut in half. I am very pleased with the operation and quality. It will acept long wood which makes wood cuting easier. I am a total fan of the Durango. Thank you soooo much!!!!"

"I have friends that have always had wood stoves some new, some old models. This stove Rocks. If you cutting wood yourself this will save a lot of time because it will accept much bigger pieces than the more pretty glass front stoves, Not to mention this will burn controlled with a simple slide air regulator. 12 hours on a full load are in the best circumstances but I never put wood in it in the middle of the night. I have central LP Heat which I havent used yet in my older 1600 square ft home."

Very Happy with purchase,
November 1, 2008
By Maggz

"Well, after doing a ton of research, I settled on the Vogelzang Durango and I can honestly say it was a great choice. I have a 3,000 square foot Bi-lonial and have placed the stove in the downstairs and it does a great job of heating the upstairs as well. The only room that may have a little issue heating up < for obvious reasons... > is our spare room over the 2-car garage; it usually ends up a few degrees cooler. I have not had and starting issues, or smoke issues. The stove can burn for a long time like the specs show; however it won’t get as hot. The stove can really heat up your living space but you will need to burn the wood as a more rapid pace. So you will need to find that threshold of how fast you want to heat up your Living space at the cost of burning the wood faster. As long as there are hot coals, you should have no problem getting this Stove back up and running. I have had multiple people come over and can not believe how warm the house felt on this wood stove. Actually had relatives taking off sweaters! Overall very happy with the purchase and function of this stove all this without the blower working too."

GREAT STOVE,

"I've had several stoves of this type over the last 35 years and can say with some degree of experiance that this stove is one of the best of it's type! It starts very well even if you don't have a bed of coals to work with, the draft and air intake if ajusted properly will allow you to turn the stove down to a smuge if your just trying to take the dampness out of the house. It is also very wood efficiant in that it will burn every piece of wood to a fine ash making the stove one of, if not the best stove I've ever had!"

Excellent Stove,
April 21, 2008
By smoky
from Northern Vermont
"I just finished my first heating season with this stove. I have a 2000 sq. ft. two level house which is well built and tight. The stove performed perfectly. I heated the whole house using just shy of 5 cords of dead Elm. Not the best wood but it was dry and worked well (and it was free!) A few times when it was 30 below zero, my oil furnace came on in the early morning but that only happened a few times this winter. (I live in northern Vermont) I really like the extra long box as there is always the occasional long piece of wood. Once the stove is cranking you can only see a heat wave coming out of the chimney, no smoke! No problems except the handle worked loose which i retightened with a wrench very easily. The blower is also pretty useless and noisy. I didn't use it or need it. Using electricity defeats the purpose any way in my opinion. Buy it in the off season while it's on sale!"

almost a great stove,
March 27, 2008
By awayfromoilinct

"I was a bit surprised that the company does not state anywhere in the instruction book that this stove is a bear to get started. I finally called Vogelzang and they very matter of factly said " oh yeah that model is very hard to get going because it is so energy efficient." They said that the flu must be hot before you can get it to draft. they suggested using a hair dryer to heat the pipe. I opted for small pieces of maple branches and stuffed the firebox to get a roaring fire going and after a couple of loads it took.
DO NOT open the door until there are just coals in the box or your house will be filled with smoke, excessive amounts of smoke. I have yet to get a good draft going with this stove and it periodically blows smoke out of the air inlet control holes.
The heat output the company posts is 73,790 btu but the tag that is attached to the stove had a heat output of 10,013-36,089 so I do not know what is up with that.
When the stove is up and going it will throw a lot of heat into the house and it will burn all night long with seasoned hard wood. I have a small home 1100 square feet single story and it can keep the whole house comfortably warm. If it were not for the lack of information from the company on the quirks of this stove and the weak drafting issue I would be thrilled with this stove but after a month in the house it has not won me over. For me it is a trade off; good heat for a smokey smell in the house.
Maybe it is just me but these are the issues I have had. I hope that you have better luck.

A very good stove,
January 15, 2008
By gsozarks
from Arkansas Ozarks
"I purchased two of these stoves last fall, one for our 1800 sq ft two story house and the other one for a 900 sq ft single story home. We do have back-up gas heaters in both but have not had any reason to use them yet. The coldest mornings here so far this winter have been in the teens.
I had doubts about the claim that the Durango stove would heat for 12 hours on a single load of wood, but I can load them with seasoned hardwood in the evening, close the front air inlets and 12 hrs later have a nice bed of coals left in both, which are still heating the homes. In the morning I just have to open the air inlet, level out the coals with a shovel, toss more wood in and have the fire take off again. I have been able to adjust both stoves to keep the homes comfortable, even though there is a difference in square footage and layouts. The ability to adjust the speed of the attached blower and air inlet helps to accomplish this result. I have checked the stovepipes for creosote buildup after two months of almost constant burning and found very little in either, which was great compared with experiences I have had with other wood stoves. I have not had any problems with smoke coming into the homes even when the air inlet is closed for the evening, and the window in the door stays clear of smoke buildup, due to the design of the airflow on the door, so that you can see the fire burning.
The only drawback that I can see with this stove, which really isn't a big issue, is that because of the design of the secondary burning portion of the firebox you would need to remove the stovepipe from the stove to clean the pipe. The creosote that would break loose when cleaning with a brush from above would fall on top of the heat proof mat, which is part of the secondary burn portion of the stove, and buildup there instead of falling into the firebox like a lot of wood stoves.
Because of the results that I have had with these stoves, I would and have recommended this model to my neighbors.

No comparison to my old Vermont Castings stove,
January 10, 2008
By Upinsmoke
from North Carolina
"I recently replaced my old Vermont Castings woodstove that heated a
2000 SF polycarbonate greenhouse with this unit. The old stove was
well used and ready for retirement.
The stove came to me with a broken asbestos(ceramic?) insert and needed
to be repaired even before installing it. Once installed it proved it
could burn for up to 10 hours but the heat generated by this unit is
much lower than my smaller Vermont Castings stove. Not only is the Btu
rating below expected (by the product description) but the top of the
unit has warped and the asbestos/ceramic plates are again broken.
The fan blower is very weak and ineffective, and essentially useless.
This stove is extremely difficult to load (given the length of the
unit). A top loader is much easier to load.
I wish I had spent the money to repair my old stove rather than
investing in this disposable unit.
