"I have used this heater for over 5 years, it works very good, and will heat a large area without any problems. I use mine to heat a triple car garage (my work shop) and like it so much that I am going to buy another one for use in my cabin in the high mountains."

23,000 BTU Portable Kerosene Heater, Model# CV-223,

"I bought this heater on the recommendation of a friend that has a machine shop in his garage. The power went out in Louisville twice last winter due to a high winds storm and an ice storm. Power was restored over a week later and this heater was used to heat the shop. Its very easy to use. I plan to use it this summer when I go camping in the mountains as well. The only thing that you really need to do is make sure that you use clean and water free fuel. Regular maintenance requires the occasional cleaning of the wick. That's it. Great heater."

Great Heat for the Price!,
November 2, 2009

"Recently renovated my 1400sqft cape-cod home and switched from oil-fired steam heat from about 60 years ago to all-electric. As it turns out, my state is lifting rate caps on electricity in 2010, so my electric bill will go up about 30% in January. Seeing this, I needed a solution to supplement the electric to keep costs down. I had a kero heater growing up, so I thought this might be the trick. Well, it hasn't disappointed yet. Granted, it hasn't gotten overly cold here yet (36 has been the low thus far this year) but with that, I haven't had to turn on the 5000W baseboards at all with this thing running and the ceiling fans on reverse. I placed the unit between the living room and dining room and it kept the 900sqft 3-room downstairs quite toasty...I even had to take it outside and turn it off a couple of times b/c it got too hot. With that in mind, I have no doubt it'll be able to stand up to sub-freezing temperatures and keep the electric at bay for most of the season.
The heater arrived promptly and was packed well in its original packaging. Installation was simple and I had it assembled in about 15 minutes (It was so simple I thought I had missed something and kept trying to read into the instructions more than needed to be). The only issue I've had with it was the auto-start mechanism. The "burner lifter" lever apparently got jammed in during shipping and was wedged in the "up" position. I didn't know this (since the instructions made no reference to what it should look like in a properly assembled position), but I eventually figured out that the auto-start was jammed and was keeping the burner housing in the upright position. Unfortunately, when I forced it back down, I snapped off the electric lighter, so I have no auto-start. This isn't a big deal really, since you can match or bic light the thing without issue (the long candle lighters work really good for this).
The capacity is pretty accurate, but I've had a bit shorter of a burn time, but that may be due to not adjusting the wick properly when the fuel gets lower. I can heat for about 8 hours on a tank (stopping early so it doesn't go out inside and stink up the place) before I refill. I'll generally use a tank a day if it runs constantly, which puts my costs (currently) at about $5/day. So if I run this all-day every day without electric, it would cost me about $150/mo to run...but my electric bills were $360/mo LAST year (about $80/mo without a/c or heating), and adding 30% to that, they'd probably be around $430/mo. Pay $150/mo for a warm house or $350/mo? Easy.
There is an odor that is given off by the kerosene, but its not overly powerful and there isn't any soot that comes off (unless your wick is way to low). Just remember to shut it off and light it outside and you'll be fine. It comes with a siphon, so no need to buy one of those, but you'll need some kero containers that can run about $15 a piece. There is also an additive that cleans the wick and adds scent (sold separately), but I've found it more neutralizes the kero odor rather than adding the "lavender" scent it claims to.
All in all, a great product, recommend it to supplement your heating needs this winter and many winters to come."

not a good design,
December 16, 2008
By phenician

"Anyone who hasn't had much experience with traditional style kerosene heaters will have an adventure putting this together and trying to figure out the instructions. Plus, the wick adjustment is extremely difficult and nonintuitive. The shield around the wick is likely to become dislodged in transit and you'll have to take the thing to pieces to align it. The instruction manual is so inadequate, it doesn't even warn against an unduly yellow flame.
Better to buy a more modern design."

"Quick response time by Northern recieved in excellent condition. Pullled out of the box with very little assembly and fired her off. Flame was a little hard to get adjusted, but it was new. Consumes more fuel than advertised. Using it to heat a 16X24 Shop in North FL, so it gets things warmed up very quickly. Thanks"

"This heater is really nice and works very well. Once it's up and running it's very warm, and there is no smell. The only thing i dislike about it is the carring handle. It seems very weak for the weight of the heater and it really bows when carrying it. Other than the handle seeming a little cheap, its an excellent heater, escpecially for when the power goes out."

Big Burn, but.....,
December 23, 2007
By dancethislife
from Wisconsin veterinarian
"After having owned several kerosene heaters, I feel I have a grasp on what works and what does not. Besides, I am a scientist and have a sense of how things function.
This model is fabricated of light materials that will not endure like my old DC-90 Toyostove Heater. The metal is thin and uncoated in places. In a few seasons, unless very well cared for and thoroughly cleaned, the oxidation products embedded on the surfaces will corrode the metal housing during the off-season of summer’s humidity.
The handle is especially poorly designed. It bends and sheers the housing if it is used to move the heater with a full tank. This is a very big disappointment, and I am surprised that the manufacturer did not make a simple fix for this poor product design. Such a design flaw could result in an accident were someone to carry the unit while lit.
Worse than the handle, however, is this model's insufficiently large catalytic combustion chamber, as well as insufficent large entry air-ducts. The catalytic converter is too short and does not produce complete combustion. Consequently, in spite of using excellent fuel and a clean wick, the room air is always tinged with a hint of unburned kerosene. This is not the case with my Turco or Toyostove models which I have had for a long time. I notice that their catalytic combustion chambers are taller, and the shield within the secondary combustion chamber that splays the flame out in order to provide complete aeration of fuel has a wider perimeter. Both these features allow the stove/heater to more efficiently burn fuel. Such design shortcomings, it would seem to me, could have been easily fixed at little expense, had the manufacturer given better fore-thought to the heater’s design.
The wick is non-pinned, and consequently cheaper to replace and easier to install. The unit was fairly cheap, which induced me to purchase it for a try. Be sure to burn your first tank of fuel out-of-doors so that you do not inhale the noxious volatilized finish fumes that arise on the heater's first burn.
As it is, I could only recommend this heater for use in a garage or workshop where there are more frequent air changes in the room and odor is less of an issue in a dirty environment.
I agree with other commentaries: the heater has little latitude for controlling output.

"We used this heater when we were out of power for 5 days. The temp was in the teens at night and this easily heated our entire main floor. We could not leave it on because it made the house too hot. I would recomend this heater. However I never saw a time it could heat for 12 hours on one tank of fuel. We went thru 13 gallons of fuel in 5 days."

"Claim is 23000 BTU. I think that's really stretching it but it makes a reasonable amount of heat.
Heat output is not really adjustable. If burning the wick (flame size) as instructed in the owners manual it MUST to be all the way up.
The handle is not adequate to move the heater if it is full of kerosene.

good heater,

"So far I've only used this to take the chill off in the morning or at night when its getting cooler out now.
It does give off an odor but there is stuff you can add to the fuel. I wonder if people who say there is no odor know a trick I dont. I'm going to try the additives.
The other doesnt bother me much tho. Growing up my grandparents used one just like this so the odor is almost comforting.
This heater will roast you out. it heats my entire upstairs in no time and i mean HOT. I'm sure in the dead of winter I'll run it for hours on end but for now an hour or so and I'm nice and toasty for a while.
The odor doesnt bother me much and for the amt of heat this thing gives off I dont care. I imagine there is a trick tho to get 0 odor as many people say they have no odor.
we have a gaslog fireplace it doesnt put out the amt of heat this thing does. and it also has an odor. I know people who have oil heat when they get a delivery it has an odor. Wood fireplaces have odors. I dont think the odor thing should be a deterant unless you have smelled it and truely dislike it.

Solid Kerosene Heater,
October 29, 2007
By NeedHeat
from New Milford, CT
"We purchased this heater last year after we had returned another manufactures model. We knew what to look for based on our previous experience with a heater that smoked produced poor heat and wasted hours of our time tinkering to get it working correctly. We first look at the wick design and ease of removal and replacement this model blew away the competition. Second we noted that it has a clean burn out of the box and 5 months into use. Lastly it consistently produced even heat around the entire wick every burn. A solid heater!"

"This full size and yet portable heater saved my life last winter. My heating gas was accidentally interrupted and I was forced to buy alternative heater for my three bedroom single family home. I chose this kerosene heater for its size and functionality. It performed tremendously. It was easy to fill with kerosene and the wick-input was a breeze even thought the share size of the heater was intimidating. It worked all night and it was very efficient on its use of the K1 kerosene."

My Emergency Heater,
October 27, 2007
By littleart

"This is my EMERGENCY heater. I have had it for about 4 years now. When the electricity goes out, this unit will heat my whole house. (over 1500 sq. ft.) It is extremely clean burning without an oder. But it will not burn the red kero. It will clog the wick. Give it the good kind (Clear) and it will last you forever. This is a great heater. I plan to buy another very soon for my second house."
