"Overall :
I think this is a fair deal, I originally had a kerosene heater which proved to be insufficient in heat and also filled the room with fumes. I then went to a 'torpedo' style heater which was adequate for heat, but unfortunately in a cold environment it caused everything water vapor to condense and therefore rust/corrode. Once I got this installed I was extremely happy with the performance and the lack of fumes, which was my primary reason for purchasing it. You do lose a significant amount of heat, and therefore efficiency/monetary cost (particularly with the LP model) in exhaust but to avoid the room smelling like diesel is worth it to me.
Problems:
I'll go over the problems I encountered since that's why people mainly read these reviews. The product is about what you would expect for the price, the quality is not remarkable and neither is the packaging. Because of this the unit arrived dented in several places but I was able to bend it back into shape. Like others who have reviewed this product, the electrical knock outs are barely an indentation in the cabinet. I couldn't get them to knock out, I tried a pneumatic air hammer and it still didn't come out so I ran the electrical through the same line as the gas because the unit was already physically installed and I could not drill them out.
The main fan, also as others had mentioned, is extremely loud and furthermore it is off balance which adds additional noise and vibration. I don't expect the fan to last that long based on the amount of vibration and noise, it really shouldn't be that loud.
Installation:
This unit is supposed to come with a 'flue transition piece' which takes the forced exhaust and pipes it into a 3" pipe. It says it is attached or comes with it, I'm not sure but I had to make my own and use a hose clamp to hold it in place. For fuel, I used regular black iron pipe with a standard appliance gas connector flex hose and it worked well (0.5 lb/in regulator). I also used a Honeywell programmable thermostat. This unit has 24v on board so you do not need an auxiliary power supply for an external thermostat which is nice. Power is pretty straightforward, I happened to use a 15amp feed with 12 gauge wire if I had to upgrade to 20amp for whatever reason.
Performance:
The cycle is very similar to a conventional furnace. First the exhaust blower comes on, the board senses positive pressure in the manifold and the gas relay fires the electronic ignition and fuel. Unlike some of the 'torpedo' style heaters this electronic ignition is not continuous for those of you who get annoyed with the sound.
Exhaust:
I opted for the horizontal mount to avoid messing with the shingles I had recently replaced. I used double wall 3" pipe although they say you can use single wall galvanized. To save costs I fabricated my own exhaust which you can also do buy purchasing the vent kit at your local big box store. EGT was ~ 190 F at the point of egress which was a horizontal run about 20 inches from the unit.
That's it, see images for details."

Minor confusion,
October 26, 2009
By SafetyGuy

"I just finished installing the 45,000 BTU model. It took me approximately 6 hours to set up the gas line, 120V line and vent stack. There are just a lot of little things that need to be set up before hanging the unit. I mounted two pre-drilled angles in the ceiling to hang the heater from using j-hooks. This allowed me to level the unit. I made a platform to set the heater on and then used my Third Hand tool to lift it the remaining 6 inches to hang the hooks through the angles.
The electrical knockout didn't knockout. I had to drill mine out.
The biggest issue I had was a label on the wiring harness connection that said connect the power source to a location contrary to the manual wiring schmatic. I am waiting for an explanation from the company on this one.
The thermostat connection points are described in the manual if you read it carefully.
I have two issus with the heater. It is not quiet as advertised. The unit is in an attached garage and is easily heard in the house when the fan kicks on. The vent pipe going to the stack gets hot when the unit is on so I hope not too much heat is going up the stack. The advertisement said it was over 80% efficient.
Make sure you run a screw through the transition piece coming off the vent fan. As I attached my 3" vent piping to it, the transition came loose.
The 3" vent pipe I used did not seem to fit well on the vent fan fitting. There was a 1/16 gap all around so I had to cut the vent pipe to compress down around the fitting. I used a high temp chalk on all my vent connections.
Otherwise the unit is small and out of the way giving me back some needed floor space. It seems well made.

"I recieved my heater quickly and started installing that weekend. Purchasing the required plumbing and venting equipment locally I was finshed in a matter of hours with the help of two friends. It's always a little intimidating when first starting a new heater, but it fired up with no problems after the inital burnoff it is odorless and smokeless and runs quietly. It brought my 2 car garage from 48 degrees to 66 degrees in a matter of 25 minutes. It's like adding an extra room to my house. I would recommend the heater 100%."

Perfect for my dog house/mother inlaw suite,
March 23, 2009
By Dustpan

"I had been setting up my workshop with all of the necessary items for comfort such as phone, cable, AC and of coarse heat. I have been looking for a bit to find the right heater and I decided on this one. After I picked it up from Northern tool and got it installed I started asking myself why I hadn’t done this years ago. When I first turned the unit on my shop was down to 38 deg and within 20 mins my shop had gotten to a nice 68. I have the unit set up with a thermostat so that when I am not in the shop I can turn the temp down but still have it above freezing as I don’t want my glues freezing and in just a few mins of going out to the shop I can be in my T-shirt working away – having fun.
So now when I am in the dog house or when my mothering law shows up
at least we will be warm.

"I am very impressed with the function of this heater. I was a little worried at first that the heater wouldn't keep up because my garage is a triple stall 850 square foot garage with a 10 foot ceiling. It works great and keeps it right at 45 degrees even when it is well below zero. it will also get it to 70 without a problem in a very short time period. It is a very quiet unit and installation wasn't too difficult. Great product!"

45,000 BTU Mr. Heater,
March 16, 2009

"I bought this heater for my 20x22 2 car garage with 9 foot ceilings. With the garage being insulated this heater will bring the temperature up from 36 degrees to 58 degrees in about 10 minutes. The heater runs very quietly. With a digital thermostat I am able to control the fan independently to move some air around without running the heat. This is a great heater."

"I installed this furnace last fall. Installation was easy. I keep my 20X30 garage at 48 degrees 24/7. The furnace uses about 1.3 gal. of propane a day in a Iowa winter. The fan was quite noisy at the beginning, but a few oilings quieted it down dramaticaly. I am quite happy with this product, and would recommend this to someone else."

"Unit was easy to install. Does heat very well. My shop is 25' X 30' and it does O.K.. Probably would do better in a 2 car garage. I have added 2 small ceiling fans to force heat down since I have a 15' ceiling."

Cozy Workshop,
November 19, 2008
By Haln

"The Mr. Heater Propane Garage Heater was delivered just three days after ordering and arrived in great shape. The heater was packaged properly to insure that it wouldn't be damaged. Installation was straight forward and with help from a friend to lift it into place, it was easy. Instructions included in the box were accurate and understandable. I installed mine with the horizontal flue and the thermostat that I ordered separately. When I first turned it on there was a slight delay which I attributed to air in the propane lines and then it was off and running. It's been running for two weeks now without a hitch. The fan keeps the air circulating in my 20' by 30' cinderblock workshop with no trouble. Heat is clean, quick and oderless after an initial 15 minute burn-in period. I keep the thermostat set at 50 degrees when I'm not in the shop and raise it to 70 when I'm ready to work. Outside temperature has been 25 to 30 degrees lately and the heater has maintained the inside temperature with no problem.
I would recommend this heater to anyone with a workshop or garage and is concerned as I was about using a ventless heater. With this heater all of the exhaust is vented safely to the outside and the inside remains oderless and free from carbon monoxide build up.

Garage Heater,
November 18, 2008

"I purchased this unit a little over a year ago. I heats my two car garage very well and has been very dependable. It was a little bit of a challenge to find a good quality low temperature thermostat. I keep the garage at about 35 degrees when I am not working in it. Most thermostats I looked at had minimum temperature of 45 degrees. The one complaint I have about the heater is that it is a bit loud. Other than that I would recommend it."

"I purchase this heater a year ago. Went thru one winter and heated my one car garage great. I could have purchase a smaller unit but a 30K was more expensive than the price here. The only problem I was having was that heater kept cycling on and off a lot. Most thermostats only have a 2 degree differential. I solve the problem by purchasing a micorprocessor based temperature controller which has up to a 30 degree differential range. The unit I use was a Ranco ETC-112000 for 24 volts @ $ 62.00. Now I set the temp at 68 and it does not come back on until it's 58. I been using it for a few weeks now and I feel that it has already paid for itself."

"I put this heater in my 3 car shop a little over a year ago. If keeps my shop right at the temp. that is set and uses very little LPG. I can come home from work on a cold day, turn on the heat, go inside to change and by the time I go out to the shop it has heated up. The nice thing is that it starts and runs with a flip of a switch. Anyone who needs heat in their shop should get one of these."

Fantastic Heater,

"Bought this unit last fall and wanted to write a review then, but thought I should give it a good testing first. Used it all last winter and we had a few -20 to -30 degree days up here in Canada. This unit heats up my 2 car, ten foot ceiling garage to 65 degrees within approximately a half hour or so on the coldest days. I love it. Used to dread going out to the garage to do anything, but now live in it. I have never ordered anything over the internet before and was very leery on doing so, especially from outside of our country, but after talking to a northern tool rep, everything he told me was right on. The price was exactly what he said it would be (no hidden costs) and the receiving date was within a week. Very easy to install, quiet and is out of the way. Looking forward to this winter. Would recommend this unit to anyone."
