"When I got mine, I could see how it would be usable for splitting logs but it's really not great out of the box. I had to grind the head to a sharper point and taper the ends back a bit. Once I corrected the angles, this was very effective. I would get it started and then wack it with the big mallet and it would drive right through."
"The wedges that I received were not representative of what is pictured in the ad. The ones that I received had a more rounded head on them instead of squared and the leading edge was thick instead of thin and well-tapered like the one pictured. The leading edge on the ones that I received were ground at about a 45 degree angle making them difficult to get started in the wood. These wedges were also unbranded however they had "Made In Mexico" on them and they were painted black in color. I am going have to regrind the leading edge to make them more functional."
"This is a decent spliiting wedge, I wouldn't want to use it to split a large amount of wood or oversize pieces, but works good on average size pieces, especially seasoned maple. Does not work too good on beech but that is typical of any kind of wedge, usually need a splitter for beech."
"I bought these wedges along with a sledge hammer to split the tougher logs and they do a great job. I am very impressed. They hold up to the constant beating of the sledge hammer with no deformalties. No mushroom head as of yet. They are well built."
