Wild thing,
July 20, 2009
By wildmouse216

"Why pay more? This saw is great. At the price I am not afraid to use it hard or abuse it. I have used it to demo houses, cut down trees, cut up firewood, and carve. I have had mine for about seven years. It runs great for me but I live at high altitude. Poulan sets the carb lean at the factory. You may have to adjust the carb to get it to run right for you. At this price buy two!"

Hit or miss,
October 28, 2009
By GrizzlyGregg
from Colorado Springs, CO
"The saw started very easily, but I was not able to get it to run consistently at high speed. I tried the carb adjustments others had recommended, as well as other recommendations found elsewhere online. All to no avail. I then had a friend try the saw. He runs a lawn service, and is very familiar with 2-stroke engines. His luck wasn't much better. However, another buddy had a WildThing up at our elk camp, and it worked just fine. I guess these remanufactured ones are kind of hit or miss. Anyhow, sent this one back and got the Poulan Pro 42cc saw. That one cuts wood like a wild thing (pun intended)."

Good saw for the price,
March 17, 2009
By brjbarr

"Bought this saw after my other saw was stolen. Cuts well as long as you don't force it. Let the saw do the work. Have put away about 4 cord using it. A bigger more powerful would be nice but the price was right after losing the other more expensive/bigger saw. Great for the homeowner who only needs to put up 5-6 cords or trim up a few trees."

Good saw for the money,
December 22, 2008
By sharkstory

"I used a lot of chain saw's . This one for power to weight ratio was good . Not a large saw . Good for a lot of jobs . A little big if on a ladder but enough power to do the job . Saw starts GREAT .
Only complaint , I don't like the chain they used . A different chain would last longer and cut faster . When I replace this chain I will get the type chain that I use on all the other saws I use . Heavy tooth and no kick back .

Good saw with a flaw,
December 4, 2008
By enginetek
from Fort Worth, TX
"I generally ike Poulan chainsaws. That being said, they're not a professional tool and do not last or perform quite as well. HOWEVER, this Wild Thing chainsaw is a good purchase for the occasional user and firewood cutter. The one I got 'reconditioned' was in fairly good shape and had a sharp chain. After a struggle to get it started, the Thing sputtered to life and reluctantly ran. It would not idle and tended to stall out at full throttle. Why? There's a good reason.
Rather than simply return the saw and get another one (that probably wouldn't work any better), I adjusted the carburetor as Poulan should have done at the factory. Poulan makes the tool to fit those oddly-shaped H and L fuel mixture valves on the side of the carb. One five-minute tuning session later, and the saw was ready to go to work. It is still running well to this day.
Why the erratic performance on these saws? Well, Poulan gives the owner of these units 50 hours of run time. The engine is set to run on so little fuel when new that it ususally burns up by the time 50 hours have come and gone. Lean running allows the saws to meet EPA emissions laws at the cost of longevity. A quick carb. adjustment, as well as running a 40:1 fuel:oil mix ratio, will make the engine run better and last MUCH longer. My properly-adjusted Wild Thing is still running strong after about 200 hours of run time. I've worn-out three guide bars, but not one engine!! So, yes, these saws are not junk. The factory just won't take the extra step to properly tune the engine."

"Got this saw several years ago and have been very pleased. Like most homeowners, I use it only several times a year. It always starts and has enough power to do the job. Very happy with its performance and would buy it again if I had the need."

Wild Thing Reconditioned Chain Saw,
November 17, 2008
By ItsMyJob
from Gurley, AL
"I bought one of these 18" saws last summer to tide me over while a couple of other saws were in the shop. At this price, how could you go wrong?? It arrived without a chain, but NT promptly sent me a new one.
I have since used it to bring down and cut up 15+ large oaks & hickorys that did not make it through the drought we had down here. BTW; I learned long ago that a timberjack greatly extends chain life. Once a chain hits dirt, (or worse, embedded nails or fencing) it's dull.
I find this product to be a great saw, at a great price, with more power than the original Wild Things. And now they've reduced the price even more!

"I recently purchased two of these saws. I like the Poulan brand of chainsaws. I use these saws to cut firewood to heat my house during thw winter. the last Poulan saw lasted me around 12 years and cut a lot of firewood during that time.I have already been cutting wood with these chainsaws and they perform beautifully."

Wild Thing 18" chainsaw,
May 15, 2008
By WildThingHater
from South Carolina
"Ordered a WIld thing chainsaw not paying attention to reviews but once I recieved and used the chainsaw I would not recommend any person to buy 1. Mine would not idle had to always press gas to keep it running and after 5 minutes of use after cutting down a 6" wide tree and trying to cut the tree up the blade was completely dull. This is not a good buy, save yourself the trouble and put down the extra cash for a new, different brand saw."

Reconditioned wild Thing Chainsaw,
April 14, 2008
By LAWDOG54
from Alabama
"I had previously purchased two Wild thing chainsaws from NTE and was very pleased with the products, so I decided to try the reconditioned Wild Thing. It was a total disaster. The saw came with a 16 inch chain rather than the 18 inch required to fit the bar and the saw would not crank. The reconditioning quality was very poor and it just looked like a very used saw, including the 16 inch chain. NTE gave me a return number and rapid refund, great company. If you want a Wild Thing which is a great product, spend a few extra bucks and get the new one, the reconditioner has very low quality control standards."

"I ordered it on line got it within the week and started it up and put it to use. For my budget and what I need it for it is a perfect match. It starts easy and is very comfortable to use. NOT too heavy and NOT too light. I did recommend it and as far as I know it will be purchased by that person. Thanks Northern Tools for becoming one of my favorite 'Toy' stores!!!!"

"the first one I ordered would not start. after about 15 minutes or so I decided to pull cover for carb and air filter and found spark plug wire was not even on the plug and had been crushed under the cover when it was re installed. after several tries it finally started but could not get it to idle and was very hard to re start.I called customer service explained problem and I requested they send me another one. Great ! Today I received the second one ,it started right up so I thought I had scored . I let it warm up idled great went to use it hit full throttle and it DIED.I let it run for a while cut some small pieces of wood but every time I hit full throttle it would start sputtering and DIE. Gess what? this one is going back too and now I am going to spend some money and buy a real chain saw I do not recommend this product they are junk . They are not refurbished to like new condition!"

"the reconditioned saw had to be brought for service before it worked. the serviceman alleged water in the carborator. Even now that it works, it is very hard to start when HOT. Starting from cold is okay, but don't ever turn if off until you're done with your task."

"The pull cord was wrapped around the shaft upon arrival. The cord would not retract. After about an hour of trying to repair it, I finally got it back to the working condition. The Poulan Wild Thing was very hard to start. After about a half hour it started and ran fine. However, the cord would not retract again, and I had to take it apart again."
