Cord Reel is too small

The cord reel or drum is too small so if the cord is not perfectly fed back into the reel then it bunches up and binds. Ours is mounted 16ft up in the ceiling and even with 10ft hanging down at all times it will still bind up at times. If it wasn't for this I would give it 5 stars. Very heavy duty and it's been in daily use about 2 years with no other malfunctions

Cord reel depth

I love the cord & reel with one exception. The reel depth isn't deep enough for the cord. You must stand precisely in front of the reel & guide the cord back & forth as you reel it in or it will bunch up on one side and jump off the reel. An additional 2" depth would fix this problem. Overall this reel & cord is heavier duty than most with this one drawback.

Could be the best cord reel on the market . . .

Pros:
1) Best bang for the buck I could find in terms of cord gauge, cord length, and build quality.
2) Heavy duty construction! I did not want to but one of those cord reels in a plastic enclosure.
Cons:
1) The mounting bracket does not install separately. This would not be an issue if for the fact that there is not enough room between the top of the cord and the mounting plate to use lag screws. The best option I found was to install two screws/bolts to slide the two open mounting holes on, then use combo lag/bolts as mounting studs.
2) No cord shuttle to ensure even feeding. The first reel I got ended up getting several wraps off of the reel the first time I used it, and then when I tried to unwrap the cord and feed it on properly, it slipped, free spun, and broke itself. I get that you can't let the cord go and retract at full speed, but when you have to sit underneath it and hand feed it in, kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?!
NORTHERN TOOL:
1) Make the mounting bracket removable so it can be installed separately.
2) Put a cord shuttle or even a guide of some sort on.
You do those two simple things and you have the best cord reel value on the market.
BTW, fix the in feed cord description on the product page. It is a fantastic 54", but you have it as 3.5' (42")?!"

Response from Northern Tool:By Northern ToolSeptember 19, 2014
Thank you for your feedback. We take great pride in the design and manufacturing of our products and we want you to have the same confidence in the quality of our products that we do. We are disappointed to learn of the issue you are having with the cord reel purchased in August 2013. We have worked with the manufacturer and updated the product by upgrading the spring used and adding two rounds of cord as a buffer to the inside of the cord reel at the center. This will help with retraction of the cord reel, giving you a superior product. Thank you for your continued loyalty and for shopping at Northern Tool & Equipment.
