" I knew this was going to require some work but at this price I never expected what I found.
Looks like the motor shaft was beaten with a cold chisel and the pulley hammered on, no set screw
required (and it was missing). The result was a half inch of runout in the pulley. See photo.
The motor ground wire was purposely cut off. Probably too short to reach the ground screw.
The inside of the casting is loaded with loose sand.
Many sharp burrs on the machined parts.
Poor fit and finish.
There is a void in the casting below the motor pulley that results in a three inch long hole. See photo.
The main R8 collet holder rotates with a "cogging" action because the OD of the collet tube is too large. When it was forced into the bearings, the inner race expanded causing the balls to be pinched tight between the two races.
The spindle bearing is noisy.
The graduations on both feed knobs are .1mm but incorrectly marked .005".
The online description says the motor is variable speed, it actually is not.
The end mill sharping attachment is unusable as supplied. There is .012" of slop between the sliding R8 collet tube and the housing when fully retracted.
The drill sharping attachment is unusable as supplied. The mounting/guide pins don't line up properly.
All of the dovetail attachments need to be reworked in order to function properly.
The user manual supplied with the grinder is much better than the online one but is still poor.
Be aware that, at the time of this writing, the manual customer service uses (seems to be the same as online) does not match the parts list in the manual supplied with the grinder. This causes much confusion when trying to order replacement parts as some assemblies and descriptions are different now.
Absolutely no quality control. Of course in order to control quality you must have some to begin with and there is very little here.
The only reason I did not return this for another is because the spindle runout was very good (less than .0005") and a replacement could very well have been worse.
I must say however that I am very pleased with customer service. A replacement motor arrived within a week and they are very professional and pleasant to work with. Other replacement parts are on the way, all at no extra cost to me.
I believe in the end it will be functional. But this level of quality is really hard to swallow for the price I paid. I would not have purchased this if I could have looked at it first. "

no what I expected

" I bought this grinder, ignoring all the other reviews, thinking they just did not know how to use the machine, or expectations were too high. I have purchased many machines and tools made in China, and figured I would take the chance. In other reviews, it is mentioned that the dove tails and slides need to be reworked or scraped this is very true. The biggest reason I bought this grinder was the fact it came with all the attachments. And I could grind endmills, and drill bits, along with lathe bits and single lip cutters on one machine. The endmill attachment is not made well. The spindle has very poor movement with a deflection from side to side of more than .030". The flute guide finger is huge and bulky and not precisely made. The finger hangs up and grabs the endmill. The spindle adjusting wheel is hard to turn and when adjusted a few thousandths of an inch makes the machine vibrate. On the other hand the Lathe bit grinding is fine, but again the dove tails need to be reworked to make for better movement. The manual goes into great detail about single lip cutters. The sections on lathe, drill and endmills is sparse. The manual is also poorly translated. Overall I would not recommend this machine. "

Tool and Cutter Grinder

" Ordered this T&C Grinder because the price was right and it was $300-500 less expensive than other comparable machines on the market. Some vendors charged additional fees for some of the accessories that came with this machine. An added incentive was there was free shipping.
The grinder arrived in what I thought to be an adequate wooden box with foam filler inside to house and protect the accessories. After destroying the shipping container to remove the grinder I discovered the guard for the grind stone, drive belt and diamond dresser was cracked and broken in two pieces.
I contacted Northern Tools and they were very polite and apologetic and said they would send out a replacement machine right away.
Guess what after removing just the top of the wooden box the replacement machine was damaged in the exact same manner. I took some digital pics and contacted Northern Tools once again. They sent return shipping labels to return the first two machines and then sent me machine number three.
After uncrating the third machine and closely inspecting it, I noticed that virtually every control or adjustment was stiff and would not work properly.
I took the machine apart and discovered hardly any of the parts were de-burred properly. All the dovetail slides were never masked prior to painting and were full of paint just like the exterior of the machine. The lubricant had hardened/gelled almost like paraffin, or was non-existent. I had to make two sets of hook spanners for two different locknuts used, a total of four spanners, or get out the channel locks or vise-grips. I had to superglue a couple of tiny scales back on because the rivets would not hold them in place.
Still have a couple of minor issues that should be easily resolved before this is a useable piece of equipment.
I couldn’t say if this was worth the price or not. The other machines offered by other manufacturers may not have been any better and more expensive. These things all seem to be made in the same factory. "

Expect to do a lot of rework

" If you think you can use this right out of the box, think again. Had to use shim stock to take up the clearances on all diameters of the wheel dresser just to make it useable. The pieces to sharpen the flutes were so tight, I had to drive the sleeve out of the tool holder with a hammer because of paint and body filler on the inside diameter of the tool holder. Making pieces to grind flutes. Had to use bluing and a file to remove high spots on the cross slides just so you could use the knobs to adjust. You still have to adjust the cross slide set screws when you change attachments. (Opinion)Facing the grinding wheel, it seems like the grinding wheel should turn clockwise instead of counterclockwise, and you should be sharpening on the right side of the wheel instead of the left side? That way you could see what you are grinding better? "

Universal Cutter Griinder

" The unit arrived complete and undamaged. Packaging was adequate despite obvious rough handling in shipment. Fit and finish was better than I expected. The attachments for grinding end mills, single lip cutters, lathe bits, and twist drills are accurately machined and perform as advertised. The manual is reasonably complete, but the translation to English could use some work. It even comes with an extra drive belt and backup bulb for the light.
After reading numerous online reviews of similar machines, I admit I was concerned. But this machine exceeded my expectations and I am quite satisfied. Within it's size limitations it is an exceptional value for a home shop machinist and will make and sharpen a wide variety of commonly used cutters. "

Be ware - get ready for a rebuild project

" I took a chance on purchasing this grinder, which is priced $300 less than any other similar model available from any other supplier. I knew why it was so cheap when I opened the crate to find the grinder had obviously been dropped prior to crating. The built-in worklight was shattered and grinder parts were loose in the crate. When I plugged the grinder in and turned it on, the spindle was frozen and would not spin. I had to completely disassemble the spindle and bearings, clean and relubricate them and reassemble to get the spindle to turn. The machining on the outer diameter of the spindle that slides in the main grinder housing was nicked and would not move smoothly, so I had to turn it on my lathe to clean it up. I have a fully equipped machine shop and am able to repair or remanufacture parts, which is a must if you purchase this grinder. It is unusable as it comes out of the box. "

Great price if expectations are not too high.

" I purchased this item with low expectations and am not disappointed. My needs are simple and I don't have a lot of budget or room in my garage for a real cutter grinder. I needed something to sharpen tools and hold tolerances on grooves and angles. Nothing too precise. You are getting what you are paying for.
Before using the machine, figure on spending a little time deburring dovetails on the tool holders. It makes a big difference. The gibb for locking the tool hold falls out every time a tool holder is removed. It comes with a diamond dresser but like the rest of the package, If you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed. I'm grinding mostly lathe tools and the tips of end mills. For this it does OK. There is an attachment for grinding end mill flutes, but don't bother. The spindle is sloppy and it will do more harm than good. The motor is slow coming up to speed. Once it's at speed everything is fine. It's not a roughing machine. It has enough power for putting an edge on.
This grinder does the simple grinding nicely. If you are accustomed to industrial quality equipment and have the space, buy a real cutter grinder.
