25XT with loader and tiller

,
July 26, 2014

"The tractor arrived in less than a week in great shape and nothing loose. Everything was in working order.
My first impression was " this isn't just a toy". It works like a larger machine but is small enough to use in horse pens and a large garden. The first maintenance is at 10 hrs. after the run-in. All of the drain plugs are marked as well as the fill points and dip sticks. Changing the fluids was easy. I usually had to rent a tractor each year for projects and each brand or type is different so it took a bit of bonding and learning which speed and rpm was proper for the job. After about 15 hours it is starting to be smoother and do better in all respects. The biggest point is the seed bed left after tilling it is so fine and smooth, and deep. The new plants realize the difference, too. The loader is very sufficient to move a large quantity of material. The rpm sensor went out but the people at Nortac sent a new unit ( I think the original may have seated too deep). The customer support from Bob and the guys has been super, they are very willing to help and answer questions and parts support. They even supplied NAPA replacement filter info. All in all this is a great deal. It costs half or less than equivalent from other brands but delivers more! Plus it's built like a tank. The only downside is that the new manual is still a work in progress but should be out soon. Nortrac is working on it now. Your neighbors will be more friendly and may have a garden or need your services. That's not all bad either. Once you have it there is no end to the labor saving jobs you'll find the tractor useful for!

Manual

"I have had good luck with the tractor
I did move the battery and air filter to the ouside of the hood to make cleaning the radiator easier I use it mostly for mowing and the radiator gets plugged regularly
The only real problem is I got no manual with the tractor
I did get a tool and parts box which may come in handy someday
The amazing thing is how easily it starts even when cold

"I've owned my 25XT for few months now and overall I'm very happy. I have 7 acres of land half wooded and I find the size of the 25XT just right. I use it with a 5' brush hog to mow a small meadow and find it has plenty of power even for thick growth. I also use it to grade my driveway with a 6' blade and again the power and weight is just right. Build quality is good but some minor improvements could be made. In third gear the gear stick interferes with the bucket lever for example. I like the shuttle shift over a standard H-pattern but you need to make sure you are fully stopped (foot on brake) before shifting gears. Seems obvious but you really have be diligent not to rush your shift or you will grind the gears. My only negative comment is that the manual is in dire need of a rewrite. Most if not all the pictures reference the old NorTrac tractors and have little relevance to these new machines. Even basic things like where to fill and check oil are not correct so you have to figure most of it out yourself. In the end given the significant cost savings vs. the competing brands I would recommend this tractor to a friend."

Nice tractor

"I was more than pleased with this tractor and some above and beyond help from the shipping guys at NT. I have used it to move several loads of dirt, tons of rock and loading a tree I cut down with no disappointments. The tractor performed better than expected and is compact enough to access the tight spaces I needed. The shuttle shift is a great feature but could be a little smoother. There's some grinding when shifting the shuttle feature. The ag tires are pretty agressive and tear up a lawn so I should have ordered it with turf tires but I want to use it for snow removal too."

Owner's Manual

"I received my new 25XT tractor 2 weeks ago. So far I am pleased with this tractor. However, if you do not have a mechanical/repair background the manual is of little help and very poor. The pictures in the manual DO NOT match the product and the instructions is some cases are very vague, especially since they have been translated from Chinese. So if you have not owned a tractor previously and had plenty of experience do order this product until they fix the manual."

"My tractor was delivered with a pin missing in the Hi-Lo range gear selector, it is now stuck in Low gear, customer service is sending parts, hope this gets the trans. working again, or I'll just have an expensive lawn ornament, during the 4 hours I was able to use it, it worked fine, horsepower was more than adequate. Owners manuals need to be updated, photos do not match product."

254 tractor
October 18, 2012
"I purchased this 25 hp tractor and had nothing but problems with it. I only have 750 hours on this tractor. as the front wheel drive train had to be replaced as from the factory they never bent the tabs on the carrier to stop the bolts from backing out. just as the steering arm keeps snapping and had a bad part sent and it messed up the radiator and side cover of the engine having an oil leak also while still under warranty as having the engine replacement. the engine was on back order for almost a full year and the tractor done NOTHING during all that time as in the way here at my home.as the new engine was sent to my home address here I recieved a card in the mail on monday and call yellow in MS as it said to do finding that yellow sent the engine back to northertool on saturday.having to wait again more time lost and northerntool had to wait for them to receive and reship the engine again.when the new engine arrived and installed it has a bad oil pan as it is cracked from the factory. will have to split the tractor back apart to replace the cast iron pan that is also part of the housing of the engine. I still have had lots of trouble with the front wheel drive axles snapping and I have nothing but a sandy yard I have been moving around as from it washing from the back of the yard to the front. the paint was not very well done on the rear wheels as they are 3/4 white and 1/4 black primer I only can guess.when it does run the engine is strong for its size. but the hydrolics seem to be little weak for the 3 point hitch almost can lift my bush hog up.
the parts dept. are friendly and try the best they can do.

Nortrac Yractor

"Purchased a 25 Hp Nortrac after washing the salt off from the transport to MD. It did look brand new. So far I have used it to get the ruts out of the ditch from the delivery. What is really nice about this tractor is it comes with replacement filters, oring seals, head gasket and tools and a pretty good manual to explain how to work on it. I have just a few hours on it but so far it starts without any problems when the temp is below twenty degrees. I have run the tractor through some of its break in task and I can say I am not disappointed. I have also called Northern to just get some questions answered and they are very responsive. If I had a complaint it would be wrap or cover it if it is on a flat bed I am still washing salt off of it when the temp gets above freezing and I can use the hose to clean it. Otherwise I am happy with my purchase. As always Northern deliverys on the product they sell."

Great value

"Just over a year ago I ordered the 254 with front end loader over the phone on a Tues. night. The next Sat. morning it was delivered, ready to drive off the truck. It came with many items I wasn't expecting (wheel weights, all 3 pt hitch hardware, tools, filters and more). It has performed flawlessly with slightly less than 200 hours so far. We had an 18 inch snowfall this past winter, and it cleared my 1/4 mile steep driveway , one pass down, one pass up, without spinning a wheel. I recommend installing a block heater ($40-$50) for starting in cold weather."

"I PURCHASED THIS UNIT IN EARLY WINTER AND USED IT MOSTLY FOR HAULING FEED TO MY CHICKENS, IF THE TEMP WAS 20 DEG. F OR ABOVE IT STARTED, I HAVE A HOSE HEATER ON IT BUT DIDN'T ALWAYS USE IT. IT RUNS CLEAN AND IS EASY ON FUEL I HAD NO PROBLEM WITH OUR SNOW HERE IN MINNESOTA, WENT WHERE EVER I WANTED WITH THE 4WHL DRIVE.
THIS SPRING MY SUN USED IT TO SCRAP SOME SOD FROM A SPOT HE WANTED TO PLANT SOME RASPBERRIES AND IT WORKED GREAT FOR HIM AS WELL.
I DID BUY IT TO RUN SOME AUGERS AROUND THE FARM AND I HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO THAT CHORE YET BUT I EXPECT IT WILL DO THE JOB NICELY, I HAVE A COUPLE OF PLACES THAT ARE HARD TO GET INTO AND THIS SHORT COULPED TRACTOR SHOULD FIT IN THERE NICELY.

NorTrac NT25

,
April 21, 2008

"I needed a small-footprint, tight-turning, 4WD tractor to work a 20 acre woodlot. I bought a NorTrac NT25, and I've used it hard, clearing multi-flora rose with the bucket, lifting tree trunks to buck and pulling trunks from dense stands to clearer spaces for pick-up to the mill. I've used this tractor for some of the densest species in the north-east: black cherry; red, black and white oak; white ash; sugar maple and beech, and the machine hasn't let me down. The one service problem I did have - a steering knuckle I broke under an extreme load - was resolved quickly and efficiently by NorTrac's service people, with no more than about 24 hours down-time.
I don't suggest using such a small tractor as hard as I do, but pound for pound, dollar for dollar, horsepower for horsepower, this one can't be beat.

Nortrac 254 with loader

,
December 22, 2007

"We have a small acreage and were looking for a compact tractor to replace our aging 60 year old one. After reviewing a number of compact tractors. We decided on nortrac. It was very reasonably priced and had all the features We were looking for, along with a reasonable warranty. I ordered the tractor on a Monday and it was delivered ready to use on Friday. It came with a tool box with spare parts and gaskets and an extensive manual. What the manual couldn't tell me a simple call to the service department answered all my questions. We received it just in time to do our last brushogging of the year. I was eager for our first snow storm and the loader, although a little slow until warmed, up kept our roads clear. adjustment on the 3 point hitch is touchy and takes some time to get it to where it raises and lowers at the speed you want. After 23 hours run time I still have not seen one leak on any of the hydraulic lines or engine and transmission. It has plenty of power to do most anything I ask. I am sure I could have bought a cheaper crate tractor. The few extra dollars was well worth the confidence of having the tractor assembled, checked out, and ready to use. A big plus for us was the backing of northern tool and their excellent reputation in the business. OH! yeah my wife thinks its pretty."

Nortrac 25Hp w/loader

,
July 5, 2007

"I had been looking for several years for a new or used small tractor to use on our small acrerage to mow and maintain with. It seemed every tractor I saw was so outrageously priced. I was looking online and stumbled across the Nortrack line of small tractors. The price was extremely reasonable, compared to what I had seen before. This peaked my interest.
I spent many hours researching this tractor. Much has been said about Chinese built tractors, the lack of quality, poor documentation, and unavailability of parts. I figured I was pretty mechanically inclined, and I felt like I was capable of working on this tractor.
I called Northern tool and placed my order, on a Tuesday, and by Saturday I had my tractor. All with bargain financing. The shipping company even arranged for unloading the tractor when it arrived here in Kansas.
I was so pleased with what I received. The size of the 25 horsepower tractor was just what I was looking for. Big and powerfull enough to attach many types of catagory 1 implements, but also small and maneuverable enough to go where I wanted to. I also recieved a tool box with some tools, oil and fuel filter, and parts like head gasket, valves, and seals. The owner's manual was failry detailed, with break in procedures, and service schedules and explainations. It also had parts diagrams included in the manual. This was certainly something I had not expected based on reviews by others owning an imported tractor.
I have owned the tractor for several months now and have just finished the 10 hour maintanence. I had expected, from other reports, for the oils to dirty and sludgy. Quite the contrary. I have come to understand that Nortrac changes the oils, and tests the tractor in the assembly process. ( From my research, I believe it is important who assembles your tractor, as the quality of assembly will affect the leaks and loose parts you will have when you recieve your tractor.)
Although I have had my tractor for a relatively short time, and have not used it aggressively, I have not so much as experienced a loose bolt. I am still impressed.
Complaints? It is a small tractor, and getting into the seat, you will have to be somewhat nimble to maneuver around the shifters and levers. It could be easier to fill with fuel, and shifting may be a little hard sometimes. I was somewhat concered by the water tempurature one hot day while I was mowing with a rotary attachment. (It could have been that I was operating it at too high an rpm, did not overheat, but was in the high end of the operating tempurature limits.) Otherwise really nothing major at this point.
The loader has been so useful. not only in the obligatory jobs like hauling dirt, but it also reaches high enough, that I lifted shingles to a roof with it. Be careful when lowering a load, and go slowly, as it will drop fast when loaded. I have a 5 foot rotary mower that I have attached to it, as well, and the tractor handles it without problem.
I believe this tractor has been improved so much over the last couple of years, that it does not compare to the units that were available 3 or 4 years ago. I would recommend this tractor to anyone looking for a small tractor to do light to medium work. Although I have seen cheaper prices on "crate tractors", I believe the overall price, and service record for Northern Tools is well worth the small dollar difference.

"Excellent buy. I've used this numerous times to move large amounts of snow this entire winter due to the high number of Colorado blizzards. Everything works great on the tractor, although the front end loader lift times can be a bit slow in the cold. Other than that, I'm completely satisfied and you can't be the price."

"Highly recommend this product for small farm use i can not believe the things that this little tractor can do.We have the front end loader with ours and we keep our roads clear fo snow with it. We live in the country and when it snows we get drifts across the road. 3 and 4 foot drifts dont seem to bother it at all with the 4 wheel drive.Cant wait for summer to see what other kinds of problems it will handle."
