TOUGH

"BUILT A LOG SPLITTER INCORPORATING THIS MODEL ENGINE (HM80) 17 YEARS AGO. NORTHERN ALSO SUPPLIED CYLINDER, PUMP, VALVE AND HYDRAULIC TANK.
ENGINE HAS RUN TO SPLIT APX 95 CORD OF WOOD IN THAT TIME SPAN. STILL RUNS GREAT! ALMOST NO MORE OIL CONSUMPTION THAN WHEN NEW.
IT WAS CAUGHT IN FLOOD WATER FOR A WEEK RECENTLY. TEARING IT DOWN NOW TO CHECK FOR INTERNAL DAMAGE, IF DAMAGED WILL REPLACE WITH THIS NEWER MODEL OF SAME ENGINE.
IT ALWAYS STARTED ON FIRST PULL. CHANGE OIL EVERY 20 HOURS OR LESS FOR LONG LIFE. USE WD-40 IN CYLINDER WHEN EXTENDED STORAGE INVOLVED.

8 Horse Tecumseh Chiper Engine

"Would never buy another Tecumseh engine. Had this on my AgFag Chip/Vac. Did not last 50 hours. Blew the bottom off it. Later found out Tecumseh has a history of this. When going down a hill or side ways it would white smoke the area. I called AgFag and got a SO What buy another. Tecumseh gave me the biggest run around possible. I even sent the engine to them, they didn't even take the engine apart. The local mach said the lower engine fell apart, was not put together correctly. Tecumseh said the 10/40 oil I used was bad. Buy another. I will never buy this brand on anything. Good luck."

Problems early on... Solvable.

"I replaced an old 7HP with this 8HP on a John Deere in February. It ran "ok" (much better than the 35 year old motor that I had rebuilt twice) at first, but had some starting issues. Put maybe 10-12 hours on it, all drained and stored. Now starting up in fall (October) and will not start. Gas in carb, it starts - so the engine is still "working," but I'm guessing float valve or line has lacquered up. This is not a design that is easy to get at the supposedly replaceable rubber hoses! And I'm faced with hours of teardown to fix a problem that shouldn't be.
I paid full price at a local Northern store - and am not sure on returns. (Admittedly I didn't save receipt as I didn't expect this to fail so quickly.) When my other engine seized up, Northern was the ONLY product in town that could provide the right shaft and footprint.

"had this thing for 4 yrs now on my logsplitter. Used as a replacement for a 6.5 vertical shaft tecumseh engine which gave me problems after only 3 yrs of using it.
Excellent machine for the money I spent for it at the time. Not as quiet as some of the OHV engines on the market however, but I will still purchase this over a honda engine any time.
Works great in the cold weather, reliable and plenty of power for what I use it for. I'm proud to own this Tecumseh!"

"Looked high and low for the proper suited engine application for a Baker Chipper Shredder I purchased several yrs ago, The Folks at NTE. Took the time to assist, research and direct me to the proper engine application. Needless to say, OUTSTANDING! The engine runs great, 1st pull start. The chips are mounding up and the neighbors are asking how much to rent it! Thanks NTE!"
