Engine started on very first pull of the cord. It matched right up tomy Troy-Bilt Horse Model tiller. I have pulled the cord nine times and used the tiller nine times. It runs fairly quiet and has plenty of power. The only improvement I can think of would be a dip stick for checking the oil. Also when the instructions say to add the oil slowly when you first get the engine take the "slowly" serious. I had my son put the oil in and, after he said the oil had started to run out meaning the crankcase was full, I added almost another quart. For some reason it backs-up unless you are very careful to go slow. I had obtained a quote for a replacement for the eight horse that came with the tiller in the seventies of over $900 and was told that the Kohler option was even more. Needless to say I was happy to find this engine for under $500 including shipping. The original Briggs & Stratton ran for an average of twenty years per short block and may have gone another twenty if the short block were still available, but why fight it? (The short block was around $300 some twenty years ago.) If I can get five years out of this engine I will be well satisfied. It is so much more pleasant to work with that the extra annual cost would be worth it.
Bought this engine as a replacement last fall for my Troy-Bilt Horse tiller. I just got around to installing it today and I must say I'm thrilled. My tiller was made in the '70's and I was worried the design may have changed. Bolt holes and shaft lined right up even used the bolts from the old engine. Filled it with oil and gas started with one pull and away we went. Very pleased with this engine.
I ordered this engine to replace a relic on a very old wood chipper. I needed to make a few modifications for mounting but otherwise it dropped right in. But the biggest surprise was when I first started it. After adding gas and choking it, I thought I would first give it an easy pull or two at half speed just to turn it over. The bloody thing started up on the first pull without me even trying! Since then, it has been a pleasure to operate. I can load the chipper far more than I could with the old engine and it doesn't slow down one bit. It just keeps on running smooth as anything. I look forward to using it each weekend.
I purchased this 8 hosrpower intek engine for my 1980 troybilt tiller, and in the most it fit perfectly with no problems, It made the tiller perform like it was just brand new it dug down deeper than it had ever dug. This was by far the best upgrade I have ever done. Will do it again in an instant.
