"This tamper is great to layer restore ditches to almost eliminate settlement. Following the guidelines with the tamper for compaction, stay just below the max tamping depth and layer your fill. Starts easy, easy to move and for the small hard to get to areas is great but it doesn't reverse so be careful."

Use only in "Close quarters" on Soft Soils!

"This plate compactor is small but not all that rugged. It does not have a reverse, so the metal angles attaching the handle to the machine have sheared off (yes, though the steel) several times from repetitive back-and-forth motion. Also, the throttle assembly (lever attached to a cable) is cheap and will shear off the cable after maybe a hundred or so hours of use.
The Honda engine is reliable. The drive belt is extremely difficult to replace, and the oil drain plug is positioned in such a way that you make a mess every time you need an oil change.
Overall, this is a good plate compactor for "close conditions", and when you don't need a lot of compactive effort. We use it in a small test pit on soft soils, so it meets our requirements fine. For large use or on stiffer soils, I would go with something bigger!"
